Hello all,
I wanted to know for those who suffer from tree nut allergies, if I used an artifical almond extract, would that be fine? I know it is a dumb question and the name implies ....but I have friends who have allergies to tree nuts and I don't want to kill them (rather wow them with my skill).

thanks in advance,
CC

ok answered my own silly question though disturbed by my findings. Artificial almond extract has benzylaldehyde...hmmmmm.....make me kinda opt not to even use it.... icon_confused.gif

it really depends - on the person and on the extract itself.

Some people with nut allergies are OK with the extract if it's artificial. Howerver, some aren't. It may depend also on the production of the extract - if it's in the same plant as the extracts with real almond flavoring...

As an allergy sufferer, I'd opt on the side of not using any nut flavoring - artiicial or not - if there's someone iwth a serious allergy to it.

thanks Bonniebakes for your input. I had wanted to make the almond sourcream cake (found on this site) but I have a friend who is allergic to tree nuts. I thought perhaps if I could use an artificial it would be ok but you are correct, rather be safe than sorry thumbs_up.gif

Has any tried the almond sourcream cake with a different extract they could recommend? I had this original vison of adding puree strawberries with a vanilla pudding mix and frosting it with a strawberry cream cheese frosting.

I have a friend whose son has a severe nut allergy and can't have real almond extract but she uses imitation almond flavoring in her baking for him without a problem. However, the best thing to do would be to ask the person with the allergy if it's safe for them

I don't use is especially if it is something that is going to school for kids, seems like there are so many with nut allergies that I rather be safe and just leave it out of everything that I bake.

The almond makes it so good, but if you'd rather be safe than sorry- you can replace it with more vanilla (there's already vanilla in the recipe if I'm thinking of the right one). The cake is still great this way!
