Help!! Hidden Pillars, Columns, Etc - Advice Needed!

Ok, my bride wants a square cake, she wants that floating look - you know, where you can't see the columns but it's not quite "stacked" either, so it appears that each tier is just hovering over the one beneath. How do I get this look? Is this the center column method, or hidden pillar, or what? What do I purchase at the cake shop, and does this method replace dowels? Also, for squares, do they make plastic cake plates? HEELLLLLPP, wedding is Saturday 3/31!!!

Yes, they do have square seperator plates. I would use hidden pillars. I think they are 6" but you can cut them to the height you need. If you use the hidden pillars they would replace the dowels because they go straight through the cake to the cake board. I would measure each tier once it is completed and cut the hidden pillars about an inch higher than the cake (ie if the tier measures 4" high, I would cut them all to 5").

do the hidden pillars attach to the bottoms of the square cake plates on the x's? Have you used them before? thanks!

They should fit just fine. I have used them with round seperator plates and they fit great. The x's on the square plates should be the same size and the round seperator plates.

Great, thanks so much!
Another question for you - when using this method (hidden pillars) do you travel with the cake assembled or assemble on site?

I have ony used them for birthday cakes and such so far, and I have traveled with them put together. With a wedding cake, I would assemble on-site. I would be afraid of the cake tiers "jiggling" while I was driving.
However, I entered a wedding cake (real cake!) in the Mid-Atlantic Cake Show and I had a 10 and 14 inch stacked cake sitting on 5" push in pillars that were in a 16 inch cake. I assembled on-site when I got there, but was tired when we left and had a long drive home (430 miles), and I drove home with the 10, 14 and 16 inch cakes stacked as described. I'm sure they jiggled on the way home, but they looked the same as when we left.
But, for a paying customer I would take the safe road and assemble on site.

are the push in pillars the same as hidden ? (which should I use?)

No, they are not the same. I think the hidden are sturdier than the push-in. The push-in are decorative because they are meant to be seen. They come in crystal look, white and grecian. I would use the hidden pillars.

I agree with the above. Hidden pillars would be better for you. I would also assemble on site.
