i saw an entry in the baby shower contest gallery and i would love to know how this was achieved, i think it is sooo adoreable.

it is the welcome baby cake with pale green and baby pink check pattern on the icing and what look to be colorflow decors. (don't know who the artist is since name is not posted)

how do you get the check pattern so perfectly even on the cake?? i'd love to learn!

My first thought was FBCT until I saw the sides. If you just needed the top done you could do a FBCT and it wouldn't show 'seems'.

My other guess would be airbrushing, but there isn't any over spray. icon_confused.gif

I created the checkerboard buttercream cake. I must of forgot to put my name on it. I am sorry. It is not hard - just takes time. I iced the cake lightly with white buttercream. After deciding how big I wanted the squares(cake size 12' X 18") I measured using a ruler the sides first and then the top. I then used tip #6 and filled in the light pink squares and then the green. I used a small angled spatula to smooth each square. I smoothed all the pink squares and then the green.( I dipped the spatula in boiling water, wiped spatula off and then smoothed.) After smoothing I let icing set up for at least 20 minutes. I then used interfacing (lightweight) to smooth. I used the fondant smoother on top of the interfacing. You can not press too hard. I hope this helps you out. I love reading everyone's ideas and viewing the photos. It is wonderful to have others who appreciate this passion for baking and decorating. Everyone is so helpful and kind. icon_biggrin.gif

I agree the cake is beautiful, but we weren't supposed to know who made the quilt cake in the contest, so much for anonymity! Janice

My point is that this is a cake contest entry, which according to the contest rules, entries are intended to be kept anonymous.

Cakequeen, this is not intended to be anything personal against you, it just seems that too many members are entering the contests and posting photos without reading and following the instructions. Janice

True enough but do you realize there is a flaw in the system? If you go to a person's album and they have entered the contest their cake is displayed and it shows the cake and it's labelled as being in the Contest album? You won't find out who each cake belongs to unless you check each member's photo album but the loophole is there anyway.

Oh well, the prize is only a mug. Shipping and handling probably cost more than the actual mug. Let's try not to get so upset.

Yes, I am aware that you can check out members cakes in this manner, if you are that determined to see who baked/decorated what. IMHO a loophole is just that, a loophole, a flaw if you want to call it that, but Rules and instructions are to be read and followed, whatever the prize may be!

I'm not upset, I just keep hoping that our members would be willing to do what is right and fair, whatever the prize. Janice

By the way, I do not have and do not intend to have a cake entered in this contest.

Yes but as someone pointed out, the person who replied to message is new so it is very very possible that 1. they created a new persona to respond to the question. 2. they created a new persona to enter the contest. Cut people some slack.

Just so you will know, cakequeen has been a member here at CC since July of 2004, and the post today is her first. That information is on her profile if you care to look there.

My comments are in no way meant to be bashing cakequeen, once the posts appeared asking about her cake, I'm sure she felt she needed to respond. I have sent her a PM with apologies for the way this thread is going!

I think it is up to us all to keep up with what is acceptable and what is not. Janice

I don't think we should be upset at cakequeen (disclaimer : not a relative or my alterego) because she answered riagirl's query as to what technique she used.

I mean really riagirl kept on asking how it was done and if you guys were really interested in maintaining anonymity someone should have stepped in and politely mentioned that the cake artist's name will not be announced until after the contest is over. Therefore the technique used will not be known until that point in time.

I don't understand why there is always some issue about the cake decorating contest on this site. If it's not about ""only voting for friends it's about "posting the same pic in the forums and announcing you made it" when it's about "who should be eligible to enter". I would hate to imagine what it would be like on this site if the prize was a lot more substantial.

Moral of the the story:::::
Everybody go read the rules of the contest regardless of if you plan on entering, voting or just commenting on the cakes.
