I have done two pool cakes in the past. I used piping gel tinted blue for the water. I made pool toys out of rolled buttercream. This customer wants me to make children in the pool and the birthday boy on the diving board. Do you have any ideas and pictures?
I agree that piping gel is more realistic. Were your people just piped in buttercream?

I found MMF hard to color. You did a good job. Maybe if I'm coloring such small amounts to make tiny people, I can do it. rolled buttercream is so much more pliable than MMF. Anyhow I'm doing the cake tonight; so I will have to come up with something! I have both MMF and rolled buttercream already made, so I'll try them both.
Plymouth and Fall River are pretty far from Groveland. I live in the north east part of Mass just two towns away from New Hampshire.

I have a bathtub, not a swimming pool, in my photos, but it still has the water you might be looking for. This is blue jello. I let it set in a bowl, stirred it up and then poured it into my cake. If you want that smooth surface look, you can also pour the jello into the cake and put the whole thing in the fridge to set. The only thing about that, is that you have to make sure your BC has made a good seal so the jello doesn't seep through and get the cake soggy. I did it once and it worked fine (I don't have a picture of it handy...I'll look for it). Good luck.

Lisa: Cape Cod! People come from all over the country to go to Cape Cod and I, from Mass all my life, have never been there. People tell me the prices in grocery stores are outrageous.
Samantha, I am using piping gel tinted blue for my water. I have used it twice before on other swimming pool cakes and love the results. I suspect that is was Texas sugar used.
I might as well post one of my own pool cakes, as this topic might be helping others who are dong them.
In both my cakes, the pool floats are made with rolled buttercream.
