Need Help With Over Gravestone Cake

Im almost hesitant to take on this project because we're in the middle of getting our house ready to sell. Half my cake stuff is at our other place, half here and a friend who is willing to let me work in her kitchen.
But here is the scenario: My ex-boss, who is influential in town (and will have several influential friends attending) will be turning 50. He has decided to throw a 'funeral' birthday party and take donations for hospice.
The request is a gravestone or grim reaper. The gravestone should be a 3D, upright 'stone.' To me this looks like a sheet cake on its side. Would that stand upright? Im not sure how it would?? would you use fondant (would MM be stiff enough?) then would you 'spackle' royal to give it a concrete look? Has anyone elver done something like this?
Grim Reaper would be a styrofoam ball covered in fondant on a dowl all the way through your basic 'mountain' wrapped in black fondant for the shroud. Would chocolate clay work better (its not exactly black though) The design I have has an arm sticking out. And Im not exactly sure how to do that...rice crispies?
blah. Im wondering if its all just too complicated for me right now. Anyone have any tips?

You can do the whole headstone but maybe you can do it on a sheet cake? I would make the sheetcake like the burial site (grass, mound of dirt, etc) and the head stone coming out of the cake. You could maybe make the headstone out of rice-krispie treats? The reason I wouldn't recommend making just the head stone out of cake is that you will most probably have problems in transport. Though you may be able to get sheet cakes vertical, it's going to be impossible to deliver that sort of cake without risking it falling over or collapsing. Just something to think about, I guess.

fondant would work....to get the little random dots of darker/lighter specks....
WARNING THIS IS VERY MESSY!!!!!
take very thinned down color. dip a tootbrush in it.
run it over a comb or window screen material or run thumnail down it.
viola -- speckles (seemingly everywhere!)
could also, if you know how and have equipment, airbrush the thing.
inscription -- got a pattern press??? press that into the BC or fondant.. If don't have that, use pinprick method (print out on paper and then use sharp pin to poke holes through paper into icing) and then trace w/ edge of pointed spatula or similar to dent the frosting.
