How Do I Make A Nice Gold Color?
Decorating By projectqueen Updated 30 Jan 2006 , 6:10am by chaptlps

I tried yesterday and ended up with a sort of yucky mustard color
I'm trying to make a rich gold that doesn't look to orange or brown.
Thanks.

Hiya projectqueen,
Welcome to CC.
First, I want to ask, what colors did you use to mix the gold?
When I mix gold, I never add black or brown. Just makes for "muddy" color. I make my gold by mixing egg yellow (lots) with violet (just a little bit). Mix those together and should give you a nice golden yellow ochre color. Check the border on the 100% michoacan cake in my photos. The gold is the border and eagle.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, that does look nice. Yes, I did add a tiny bit of brown when trying to make my gold. I tried a bunch of things but started with Lemon yellow to which I added egg yellow and then brown and then red to try and fix the brown. All this together = mustard.
I'm attempting to make my daughter the doll cake wonder mold and dress her like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. On my practice, the lemon yellow works great for the dress color but she has that darker golden ruffle that goes around the whole dress. That's what I was trying to use the gold for. I'm going to try your suggestion, thanks.

My egg yellow is by Americolor. I bought it in a local candy/cake making supply store.

k the egg yellow from americolor or bakerycrafts is about the same as the wilton golden yellow.
It's a deep rich yellow like egg yolks. With a nice warm undertone. whereas lemon yellow has more of a greenish cool undertone. You want to start with a "warm" yellow for a nice gold color.
BTW ladies, ty for the wonderful comments.
