Cake Board - What Do You Use To Cover Yours?
Decorating By sabbrina Updated 9 Feb 2006 , 8:06pm by loriemoms

Hello Everyone
I have noticed many different ways that everyone covers their cake boards. I was wondering how YOU cover yours.
Also, I have a quick question I hope that some of you can help me with. I have seen some people use what looks like wrapping paper to cover their cake boards. I LOVE the idea of doing that, but my questions is .... wouldn't the grease in the icing make the wrapping paper yucky looking? Also couldn't it make you sick? Is there a special type of wrapping paper that you would use for this? One that is lined maybe? What is it called and where would you find it?
Thanks and please share your cake board covering ideas and any pictures you may have

I use wrapping paper, funnies paper-newspaper-just cover that with clear contact paper before putting on the cake! Tissue paper works, anything you can think of! Just be sure to use the clear contact paper over it and the grease won't pull through nor will the paper tear! Use your imagination-endless possibilities!! I use the foil paper from the cake store too!

i just use 2 layers aluminum foil...not very attractive, but it does the job.

that's a wonderful idea! where can i get contact paper?

The best idea I have come up with so far is to use those plastic disposable tableclothes you can get from any Dollar Store or Party City, etc... They come in over a dozen colors and you can get them for 1$, which covers a multitude of cake boards.

I use the Fancy foil from Wilton, I like the look of the florist foil, but am afraid of the fact it isn't food safe. The wrapping paper covered with clear contact is a good idea. I would think contact would be food safe being it is to line shelves in the pantry with.

I vary between the wilton stuff and the florist foil my cake store sells. I have also heard of people who use tissue or wrapping paper using the clear cellophane to cover it. I would guess it's food safe as you can buy the little cellophane bags for treats and it's often used to cover cookie bouquets, etc, but I just think it would be a pain because it tears so easily, but I've never tried it.

I found mine at Wal-mart in the section with all the shelf liners. I just used the wrapping paper and clear contact paper for the first time the other day and loved the results!

I use Reynolds freezer paper also. Be sure to use the shiny side. Foil works also and the Wilton foil is pretty, but more expensive. The contact paper is a good idea if you want a design or color and then cover it, but doesn't it get expensive also? The fondant and ribbon look nice! I do like the boards covered even if they are grease resistant.

I started out with regular foil, then I thought the presentation of the cake is as important as the taste. that's when I started using the fancy foil that they sell in the cake store which is very pretty.
Then last week I started using wrapping paper and contact paper. I absolutely love it. the possibilities are endless and its looks so colorful it's also way cheaper than the fancy foil. I will still use the fancy foil for certain occasions but for most everything else I'll use contact paper

I've been using aluminum foil to cover my boards for years. Just yesterday I tried the wrapping paper and clear contact paper for the first time. WOW! It really worked and looked great. Much more professional looking than plain foil. I like the idea that I can match the paper with the theme of the cake. I just got some paper from the dollar store so I didn't spend so much. They had some great ones for Valentines day too.

I use different wrapping, wall and tissue paper to cover my boards and top with clear contact paper.

I mostly use the fancy foil from the cake store - it looks nice and if you buy it by the roll is fairly inexpensive. However I have done a few where I cover the board in royal icing then add a ribbon around it - kinda the same technique as Antonia - it looks very nice. Then you can tie in the theme of your cake to the cake board!

I use wrapping paper, tissue paper, srapbook paper- covered in clear cellophane.
I use framed mirrors, mirror tiles
or fancy foil.
Love using matching ribbons to accent
I really want to try covoring my board with fondant.... I love the way that looks, but have yet to do that.

I don't cover any board less than 15". I use 12 or 15" floor tiles from Lowe's. They cost about $1, are very sturdy, are pretty and polished, and wash easily.
What a great idea. You wouldn't have to worry about the board not being supportive that is for sure. You can get them in really big pieces too. My SIL is a tiler layer my trade. I will have to ask him about that. He has brought me pieces of some beautiful tile. (I also make mosaics) I will have to see if he can get me bigger pieces now. He always has left overs!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to use fabric covered in clear contact paper, especially for holiday cakes. You can find holiday fabric at Wal-Mart usually for $1.00 a yard.

mgowan,
Do you have a pic you could share where we could see how the tile looks with a cake. I love the idea.

I have a question about clear contact paper - are you referring to Sarawrap or plastic wrap for food? What kind of tape do you use to hold it together?

Contact paper is a vinyl shelf liner material. It is self adhesive and very sturdy. You can find it in stores like Wal-Mart in the housewares department with the other shelf liner products and rubbermaid containers. I've only used it for two of my cakes, and I'm already hooked. It looks great over wrapping paper or anything else that you want to cover your cake board with.

I will have to look for a picture of a cake on a ceramic tile. I use them mostly for my own cakes, as those are the biggest ones I make. I sell a lot of baked and frosted, yet undecorated cakes for other people and I use 10" board and doilie. However, I started using the ceramic tiles when I needed support for a 15" cake for my husband's 40th birthday. The sturdy tiles really are a bargain and so easy to clean and reuse. They come in marble and in all colors. Now if they would only come in round, heart and petal shaped! ...... You also don't have that much invested if it doesn't get returned.

Well, I guess I'm going to be picking up some clear contact paper my next trip to wallyworld! That's an awesome idea. I've only used foil to cover my boards so far too. I have not been decorating very long though, so I'm sure there are a lot more tricks of the trade that I have yet to learn. I've already learned so much on this site. Thanks!
