Hi, I bought some Heath bar toffee bits and wanted to incorporate those into a chocolate cake. I looked on cake central and did a bunch of web searches for recipes and haven't found much. This is the closest so far: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/3154?id=3154
Has anyone made a chocolate cake and mixed in heath bar/toffee bits? I was thinking of doing a Duncan Hines chocolate mix with chcolate pudding, chocolate chips, heath bits and caramel filling. I am concerned that the heath bar pieces will all sink to the bottom. Will coating them with flour like I do with choc chips work? Or would it be safer to use those in just the filling and/or as a topping.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you,

Jodie

I've used them in a scratch chocolate cake and truthfully, they just sort of disappeared in the baked cake.
I think your best bet is to use them in the icing or as a topping.

Well the cake I use with Heath bars, you wouldn't be able to decorate, but it is Oh So Delicous. icon_cool.gif

Make a chocolate cake, take a straw and poke holes all over the cake, then pour in a can of condensed milk into the holes. Then pour a jar of carmel over top of that. After it all soaks in , then you crush up the heath bars, and spread them all over the top.

Its called Heath Bar cake. It is so rich, make sure you have a glass of milk with it.

Its a great cake, but you won't be able to get it out of the pan to decorate.

Thanks guys! It sounds like they will melt if I bake them in the mix so maybe I will do as ellantehalima and mix them in the filling instead.

brightbrats - I saw a recipe like that as well and will try it when I am not decorating the cake. Sounds scrumptious!

Keep the suggestions coming icon_smile.gif

I made the cake. What I ended up doing was flouring 1 cup of chocolate chips and about 1/2 cup toffee bits and adding them to a devil's food mix with pudding. The toffee did melt somewhat like SugarplumStudio warned. It tasted really good though! But the melted areas of toffee sugar made the cake really hard to cut. I wouldn't recommend adding them in cake that you are worried too much about leveling perfectly or sculpting. Luckily the cake I was making was a pile of poop so I didn't have to worry too much. The pic is in my album, but I won't attach it here incase anyone has a strong gag reflex icon_smile.gif

Thanks! It was fun to do and especially fun to see everyone's reaction. Luckily no one was too grossed out so we all had a good laugh. My husband was laughing so hard that he had trouble blowing out the candles.

I have added the toffee chips to cup cakes and did not have a problem. The only problems was I did not get one! LOL. I did not coat them just mixed them with the batter and baked.
