Pirouette Cookies....how To Cut Them?
Decorating By JavaJunkieChrissy Updated 3 Mar 2007 , 5:02am by ShirleyW

I have an order for a cake that I will need to have done for Friday. I have admired the cakes that I have seen on this site that have the Pirouette cookies around the sides.
I bought some of the cookies tonight and took them out of thier package to see how big they are. They are long. I am sure that I will have to cut them or else it might look funny....?
What is the best thing to use to cut these delicate cookies? I don't want to crush them or mangle them.
I'm going to wrap a ribbon (chocolate brown w/ gold accents) around the bottom or middle of the cake. I don't want to put a bow on it just the ribbon. Would I be able to adhere the ribbon with a dab of Royal Icing? I thought that might work..?
I'm excited about this cake. This is the first "non-family" cake that I will be doing.
Thanks for your help!
Chrissy

I 'sawed' mine with a serrated knife. They crumbled a little bit where the cut was but not bad.
As for the ribbon, royal icing would be a good way to secure the ribbon to each other.

Yep that helps alot!
I will probably use one of my steak knives. I think my big serated knife would be over kill....
Thanks,
Chrissy

Thanks Shirley,
I'll make sure I save some of the crubs as a little snack....LOL!! I'm still going through the stage of tasting everything I make. I am finding that I'm getting sick of the smell of cakes baking....LOL!!
You know I got this idea out of your gallery. I just fell in love with the look of this type of cake. Thanks again for sharing your work with us! ((((((HUGS))))))

This may be kind of a "DUH" comment, but I didn't think to tell you one step I use in cutting the cookies. I cut one to the exact height I need for the cake (about 1" above the edge of the cake) then I use that one cookie as a measuring guide for the others so they are all the exact same height. I just think it looks better on the cake than different lengths, to me if they are tall, short, tall it looks like a broken fence.

I was so pleased with the cake that I did. It looked so nice.
I did use the little left over end as a patern. That way they were all nice and clean looking. I shaved some chocolate curls and put them around the top edge of the cake. Then I wrote one the cake. I was very worried about that. But I ended up melting some chocolate and piping on a piece of parchment. I wrote every word several times that was I could pick the best one. I then took my offset spatula and very carfully lifter the entire word and placed them on the cake. I thought I was just too slick....LOL Sooner or later I will get better at writing directly on the cake but until then I will continue my "slick" trick...
The cookies scraps were yummy....one of my boys drinks coffee and we had some of the ends of the cookies this morning with a cup of coffee. They were good.
I wish I could post a picture of my cake but I don't have the "technology" to do that yet. But I will be getting a new computer and digital camera within the next few weeks.
I'm anxious to show you all how you've really helped me out.
Thanks again,
Chrissy
