Alice In Wonderland Cake - Ideas Needed
Decorating By dammarell8 Updated 1 Mar 2007 , 6:19pm by ShirleyW

My daughter is having her 6th birthday next month and we are having an "Alice in Wonderland - Down the Rabbit Hole/Madd Hatter Tea Party" theme. Any suggestions for a cake...I was thinking about a topsy turvy cake (have never made one) so do not know if sculpting the cakes or using styrofoam wedges is the best way to go. [Easiest for me would be to buy from a bakery but I have always made their cakes.]
Also - any ideas on where to find Alice/Wonderland figurines? I saw the incredible photos of people who have made theirs out of gumpaste but I am not that talented. I thought about putting an "Alice" music box that I found on eBay on the top tier.
Any suggestions?

I made a practice topsy turvy cake and decorated with different shapes. It looked good for 1st attempt and the initial comments were Alice in Wonderland looking, so I would do that cake. I sculpted following instructions on this site and it was not bad at all to make. If you have a local party store in your area see if they carry the figures or perhaps your grocery if they make cakes, they may have the figures in the bakery and will sell them to you. HTH

You could do the topsy turvy cake and do a tier in green and playing cards made of fondant around the sides, with rose bushes ( queen of hearts). The top tier could be the mad hatters hat, you can place the figurines all around the cake. I know they have sets of Alice in Wonderland figurines at the Disney Stores. Or you can check on line at their website, they always have sales going on. I don't know what area you live in, but Disney parks do have mail order, you can check their website for the phone number, and ask them if they have them in the parks, it is so easy to order from them.

Here are some Alice cakes from the gallery. May I suggest you not miss the ones posted by Jelena, they are multiple images in each pictures. This is one of the most amazing works of art I've ever seen. You may not want to do one quite this involved, but I just wanted you to see it.
