Just wanted to tell everyone that I found Duncan Hines cake mixes for Tres Leches cake at a small grocery store near where I live. I'm not sure if they have them at Wal-Mart & etc. I haven't had the chance to try them yet -- I'm going to try and get a cake done this weekend. I'll let you know how they are.

Couldn't find one at Kroger/Randall's, but found one at Fiesta! REALLY yummy! I put strawberry filling in mine and then peaches on top. Note that this takes 3.5 cups of milk for the "milk syrup" and 4 eggs. Plus you still have to make a topping. I have never made tres leche from scratch, so I don't know if it is more cost effective to buy the mix. The mix cost almost twice the amount of a regular cake mix and makes one 8 inch cake....I actually made two thin layers so I could put the strawberry in the middle. Interested to see what others think......

i've seen it at walmart here. (northeast colorado) and yes it is quite expensive to make 3-milks from scratch. or you can just take a regular ol yellow cake mix or recipe and then make your milk mixture and soak it that way. it's the milk soaking solution that makes it special. Most of the time you add a special flavoring to the milk mix to flavor the cake. you could add annisette or dark rum or even bailey's to flavor the milk for the cake. what tastes really good is chambord liquor (gives it a wonderful rasberry flavor). Don't worry the alcohol is cooked out when you cook the milk mixture. Just make sure that you use a very light icing for the cake as it is very very delicate. and bc will basically cause it to break from it's weight.

Tres Leches Cake: Pastel de Tres Leches or Three Milk Cake is a butter cake flavored with vanilla. It is soaked in a mixture of three different milk products, hence the name Tres Leches. The three milks, when combined, create just the right sweetness, density and "mouth feel" for a rich cake, making it moist but not mushy.

quadcrew,
the recipe that bubblezmom posted is the closest to what i am thinking of.
Unfortunately, i can't be of more help to ya but i have a co worker who makes three milks cakes from scratch all the time and i will ask her what her fav recipe is (she's from mexico). She also likes to get her cakes like dripping oozing wet with the milk mix. I will ask her and see what she says.
