Hello,

I bought a checker board cake pan set last night and I was wondering if any one has done one? If you have - did you use 3 cake mixes (make 3 cake batches) or just one? I think I am going to try it this weekend and I was just curious. It looks like it will be really fun.

The instructions say you can use one mix, but the layers will be very thin. Two mixes are a little over, so be prepared to make some cupcakes with the left overs.

It helps to have a second pair of hands to hold the rings in place while you put in the batter. I put the batter in large pastry bags (it was thick batter, and pouring didn't work).

The cleaner the divisions of batter are, the nicer the checkerboard will look when the cake is cut.

just make sure your consistency for the batter is the same (anotherwards done use two different recipes). I made this mistake (i have a favorite chocolate recipe that is relaly watery -from here) and my dh yellow and they came out more of a marble then blocks.

I was going to make a too white cakes at the same time and divide them up and make two different colors. That would be ok right?

new hartford is 10minutes east of Cedar Falls. A very small town, and we're 4 miles north of there out in the country. University of Northern Iowa is in Cedar Falls. Melvira is also from Iowa. you'll get to know her on here. Note the Melvira Methond in smoothing cakes. She's in Lost Nation. Can't wait to see the pics.

YEs two colors should work just fine cause the batter is the same consistency (identical).

If anyone is looking for this pan set i got it at walmart for cheaper then the other stores. if i remember correctly it was 8.88??? it was less then michaels and acmoore so i bought it there.

gluck everyone.

I made the scratch recipe on the box. It made the perfect amount. I think two mixes would do a good job. I suggest a thicker batter because when you pull out the divider it mixes a little. My checkerboard was not as sharp as the one in the picture. BTW the cake from the recipe on the box tasted great. I used dark chocolate in the batter and frosting. Yummy!

I used it once--I was intimidated but once I did it I found out it was VERY easy! I made the candy corn cake for bosses day that was on Wilton's website last fall. It called for just one white cake mix and that was plenty. I divided up the batter into thirds as the recipe called for and colored the 2 orange and yellow, leaving one white of course. I poured one color at a time, and when I brought the divider out of the pan, none of it ran together at all.

My boss loved it and my coworkers thought I was a miracle worker icon_smile.gif If you want to read the instructions and see their photo just go to Wilton's home page, search under recipes and it is called "how candy corn is born". I also saw an Easter cake recipe using this pan set & might try that.

I have a picture of the finished product but don't have it on my page yet. I wish I had a picture of it cut so that you could see the final design inside.

Hope this helps icon_smile.gif
