
I saw that quite a few of you are making chocolate dipped pretzels. I know they are fairly easy to make...I have everything to do them, but was wondering, is there a trick to keep them from being flat on the back from laying them on the sheet pan? Also, how much shortening do I need to add to my chocolate to get it to harden??? Thanks in advance!!!

I don't know of any trick for the flat back.
As far as the shortening, what kind of chocolate are you using? I use the chocolate bark that you can get at Wal-Mart/Kroger. Its very good and hardens within 5-10 minutes. You don't add anything to it. Just melt and add the pretzels.

I use almond bark too and they taste yummy. As far a trick, you know there is one b/c you can buy them and they are not flat but mine end up getting flattened too.
I am going to dip the ritz peanut butter crackers in almond bark instead. Any tricks on dipping to get the whole cracker? I think it was gilson6

Hold over pan and allow to drip. Roll in whatever topping while chocolate is still sticky, but not wet. Roll again to help round out any chocolate drips that are hardening. Break off any flattened chocolate drips once the chocolate has set.
Chocolate will harden on it's own. I thought the added shortening was to help it stay melted longer. Don't know. Anyway, the almond bark melts easily and will stay melted for a good while. No need to reheat. However, it has a very sugary taste. The chocolate tastes better, but you have to work to keep it the right consistency. I don't have a warming tray so I turn on the oven and keep the chocolate on top of the stove.

If you don't have a warming tray, you could use a heating pad if you have one of those.

I put the whole ritz cracker w/ peanut butter filling in the bowl with the chocolate and push it down with a fork. You have to be careful because sometimes the crackers will slip apart a little and you need to push them back in line. I then lift it back out with the fork and let it drip until it stops dripping then I put them on wax paper to dry. There is a flat back on these like the pretzels have.
The dipped pretzels in the stores are probably commercially made -- they probably have machines that do them. I have never seen homemade ones that aren't flat.

I dont add anything to my chocolate, I just use the chocolate bark (everyone loves the white chocolate) I dont use the sticks, I make them with the little pretzels, put them on a cooling rack and sprinkle with different colored sugars. Nobody seems to notice the back of them!

when I dip pretzels, I don't like the flat back either so if i have a piece of styrofoam I use that to hold them up...if not, I get an empty cereal boxz and cut little slits in it and put the pretzels in there so that they are standing straight up...that way, no flat sides....
gilson6...I tried the chocolate dipped ritz crackers and everyone loves them....I refrigerated them before I dipped them so that I could stick a skewer in one of the holes of the cracker...it wsa just easier for me to dip them and get them out of the chocolate....but they are very good and they look very professional....thanks for the recipe

I make my pretzels with chocolate and vanilla almond bark. I also use pretzel rods. The pretzels that I just dip in chocolate and zebra stripe with white (or vice versa) end up having flat bottoms, but the ones I roll into something don't. I roll mine mainly in sprinkles and nuts. Oh, my turtle and smore pretzels don't have flat bottoms either.

what kind of pretezels do you guys use...just regular bagged store bought ones with salt..or unsalted...i would love to try this...and can you just use melted bakers secret choco. thanks

Everyone: What is your favorite brand of pretzel to use? I don't much care for pretzels as they tend to just taste like flour. I bought the Synder's brand and they are quite good.


Bubblezmom...after I dip it I let the chocolate drip off then when I stick it in the box, it doesn't matter if it drips down because it will just blend in with the chocolate on the pretzel and it won't get on the bottom uncovered portion of the pretzel because it is inside the box....am I making sense...I like snyder pretzels too...they seem to be more fresh than other brands that I've tried...but when they are covered in chocolate...I really don't think it matters too much...

For turtle pretzels:
Dip ALMOST 2/3 of the pretzel rod into melted caramel. Let set for a few minutes. Dip the caramel pretzel into melted chocolate or chocolate almond bark, making sure to cover the caramel. Immediately dip into chopped pecans.
For smore pretzels:
Dip ALMOST 2/3 of the pretzel rod into melted marshmallows, then dip into chocolate or chocolate almond bark making sure to completely cover the marshmallow. Roll into crushed graham crackers.
The smore pretzels get really messy. I was wondering if I would be able to use Marshmallow Fluff instead of the marshmallows because they don't stay at a nice melted consistency for too long.


I just tried caramel-dipped marshmallows! They were so good! I froze my marshmallows before I dipped them. I want to try to dip them into melted chocolate almond bark after the caramel so I can stack them.

Thanks. They are really good! The best part is that they're really simple to make. My sister said she saw them at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for $2 each!

I dip the pretselx in choclate (white, milk, or dark) then I roll them in chopped nuts or Christmas cake sprinkles, or chopped espresso beans, or crushed peppermints, or anything else I can think of. Then. when you set them down to dry, you can't even tell that the back is flat.




Ok. I understand now about the pretzel-holder. The box acts as a dam so the chocolate can't drip on the bottom of the pretzel rod. Thanks!
Those smores sound so good. Might be worth the mess. I know this sounds silly, but where have the grocery stores hidden the caramels? They were next to the apples all fall and now they've vanished. I guess I'll check the bulk candy section.






for those of you who have done peppermint sticks which ones work best...the hard or the soft sticks

I made something new this year with pretzels...I bought the little square pretzels, put a hershey's caramel and choc. kiss on it, put in the oven for just a couple of minutes until the kiss starts to melt, take out and put another pretzel on top...They are really good and very easy. These would be very good dipped in choc.
