Okay my daughters birthday is this week and I am starting on her cake. I was going to bake the cakes today. I mixed up two betty crocker white mixes, with all the stuff added of course... As it is mixing I see black pieces. So I looked at it for a bit and there were just too many plus in white cake? So I dumped the entire thing. I called BC and they tell me that it is "underdeveloped food coloring" and they will send replacements to me. She gets the info on the batch number etc and thats it. But why would there be black coloring in a white mix? It doesn't look like anything colored, it could be a very dark brown. They are different sizes and very hard. What do you think? My dh thinks it is some kind of fecal material.. ewwww.

edited to say I bought 6 mixes and they all have it in there. I opened all the others and saw it in the bagged mix. There are two batch numbers also.

I just used 2 boxes of BC cake mix - one choc and one white - no problems there.

Not sure what it might have really been.

I wonder if you could give it to the health dept?? Even if it is "underdeveloped food coloring", I can't imagine that 6 boxes would have it (sounds like a problem with the BC plant that made the batch). Seems kinda odd to me.

I would ask the health department to analyze it.

was it the "white" cake or the "vanilla" cake? From the picture on the front, the vanilla cake looks like it has "vanilla specks" in it... could that be what you saw?

Bonniebakes has a good point. If it is vanilla, it could just be pieces of the vanilla bean--kinda like vanilla ice cream with the bits of "real" vanilla in it.

They used to make the vanilla cake with vanilla bean pieces in it so it was specked, but they were uniform specks.

Gosh, that's weird. I would definetely get your money back. I have used BC & I don't like them at all. They are too crumbly IMO & they don't rise like DH does so I only use DH. LOVE DH!!

Vanilla bean specks was my first thought. But if they are willing to replace the mixes and mention underdeveloped color, I guess that means there is artificial color added to cake mix?

Well I am not sure. It is not Vanilla cake though.. it is the White. And reading the box there are no colors mentioned.. I mean you mix it up and it's completely white normally... So I am not sure. NOt going to be using them though...

I always use BC mixes without a problem. But things happen. Not cake related. But I had 2 weird food product things happen. I bought a box mix of cheesy mashed potaoes. And when I dumped the mix into the water. I discovered a big wade of I don't know what. It kind of looked like card board. But to big for it to have come off the box when I opened it. They told me to send it in and I would recieve some coupons in the mail. I never sent it but they did send me the cuopons. Second was a bag of cereal. It had a large black blob in it. They said it was probably some cerael that stuck together in the process and got burned. So it could be alot of things. So if they will replace it then that is great. But don't give up on the BC mixes. I didn't change my mind about those other products and still use them with caution of course.
