Hippie Style Cake. Help With Ideas, Please!

Ok, I got my first order today !!!! I am scared and excited at the same time, I 've only made 5 cakes in my life and still need to learn so much. I need to make a birthday cake for my niece. Her mom left the design up to me but only asked for different colorful flowers on the cake. Well my niece is into hippie style of 60-70th, so I wanted to somehow incorporate it on the cake. I definetely want a peace sign on the cake, probably a FBCT. I want the hippie colorful bus too. My question is how do I make this bus? it will be small, maybe 3 inches long. Is it better to make parts in royal icing, or buttercream and then just glue them together or any other way?
May be someone already made a cake like that and has pics or some tips. I have 3-4 days to think on it, as the cake is due next friday. Any advise will be helpful!!!

Are you talking about a 3-d bus? I would use fondant for it. And in that case you would make the wheels, and then the main body. Then do the windows and glue put it all together! Don't forget to add tiny flowers to the bus! Sounds cute.

A peace sign with flowers weaving in an out of it on the side of a tie dye VW bus.
VW bus would be simple. A loaf pan would work, for the shape and than it's a matter of tires and windows, etc.

OH that's a good idea too. I was just thinking of a bus sitting on the cake. That would be really cute.

Watch the opening credits to Grease. LOL There is enough inspiration there and then some.

Thank you for the quick reply!!
Sweetpeeps, yeah I wanted a small 3 d bus. Unfortunately fondant won't work for me, my family don't like it much .
Mrsright41401, flowers weaving in and out on a peace sigh is a great idea! The bus will be so small that I can only make it in different colors and maybe add a few very tiny flowers to it and make a peace sign on the cake itself. I guess I 'll carve the bus out of piece of cake. Hopefully it will work.

I made a tie-dye t-shirt for a party once - it was very easy to carve the shape and then you can put any type of design on it. I also just saw in the gallery someone had made an adorable pair of denim bell bottoms with cute 'embroidered' designs on it... lots of fun ideas!

You could still make a little bus out of mmf.....they could take it off before eating. I made a fondant peace sign on this one, and wrote Hippy Birthday!
Good luck! Sounds cute so far!

I would do the Grateful Dead's dancing bears in rainbow colors around the bus too.

The more I watch Duff and the Ace of Cakes the more I think carving the rice crispy treats might be easier than anything else. It has to be easier to cover with MMF. I am going to try making a golf club head out of it tomorrow for my next cake.
