How do I attach satin ribbon to a fondant covered cake? Everything I have tried, bleeds thru and stains the ribbon, ie gum glue, RI etc. (BTW, it is a dummy cake for a photo shoot so it doesn't have to be edible, but since it is for a bridal magazine, it has to be perfect)
Thanks

The best advice I've been given is to either attache the end with RI or buttercream and then loop it around the cake attaching it back to the same spot with RI and then cover it with a small flower or other decoration. OR you can use PAM to spray the entire length of ribbon, thus "staining" it evenly and then apply it.

I secure mine with a pearl head pin at the back of the cake.or sometimes use glue dots on the ribbon so I hold it at the back pull around tightly and then use a glue dot to hold ribbon to ribbon not attaching it directly to the cake.

Ditto on the pins. I like the corsage pins.

I use a VERY thin coat of piping gel painted on with a small paint brush. No stain.

Like catlharper, I've used a dot of buttercream at the back of the cake and then run the ribbon around the cake, followed w/ another dot of buttercream.

We use either plain scotch tape or double sided scotch tape. We overlap just enough for the tape. You can cut it to the length that you need and it's easily removed when you are ready to cut. You don't have to worry about anything bleeding through and there is no mess when you take it off or any pin to worry about being left in the cake!

Thanks everyone, I have tried the pin in the back and the dots of RI in the back, but I really want the ribbon on tight all around and that just doesn't seem to work. I want to afix it on all sides, not just the back.
mamawrobin, piping gel doesn't show thru? Do you put it all over the back of ribbon, or just dots of it?

I hear what you are saying about wanting it tight. Let us know if you figure something out...I'd definitely be interested to try another method! Good luck!

I always use double sided tape. It has worked great for me so far. Good Luck!

ok, went back to the shop today in a major snowstorm, and darn, you can see the dots of RI that I used thru the ribbon. Ok, now I will try doublesided tape and see what happens. If all else fails, I will make a fondant ribbon and chuck the real satin ribbon. Oh God, I am so bad at fondant ribbons

Thanks king-girlz, I have to buy double sided tape, I don't have any on hand but we are getting socked with snow, over 1 foot so far today. Once it stops, I will head to the store for tape and let you know how it goes

If you have any type of tape just fold it over into a loop. Put on the back of the ribbon and stick it to the ribbon where it is overlapped. To keep it from pulling apart you can also tape the loop down on the side furtherst from the edge.

"grease" your ribbon with Pam or any cooking spray, so the ribbon is evenly soaked, then I use thin ribbons of BC in about 4-6 different places to glue it in place on the cake. Then I gently run my finger evenly around it to smooth it onto the cake and even out any lumps. Good Luck!

Double sided ribbon is very good provided you get it the same width of the ribbon you will be placing on the cake. I use this very often. Tried using RI and gel, both stained. Using cooking oil will the ribbon look ok sprayed in oil. wont it look wet? let me know please
