I am making a three tier square cake for my husband's change of command, 12", 10", and 8". My two year old just decided to 'sample' a fairly large chunk out of the corner of one of the 10" layers while it was cooling. It is at least two inches that is missing on either side of the corner. I am planning three layers for each tier. Other than re-baking, what are my options for dealing with this void? Would filling it with icing be acceptable? Because I baked the layers individually instead of torting, I don't really have any scraps from leveling that could be used to build it back up, if that would even work. Arg! Kids were home for 2 minutes, and this happens.
Sorry I don't have much advice, but the title was excellent! Sounds a bit like my hubby :)
Excuse me for being so bold but isn't this a little unsanitary? I would not want a cake that a child stuck his fingers into and probably then into it's mouth and back again.
I think you should bake them a new cake.
The layer was just cake, no frosting. The corner was grabbed by the hand and broken off. I caught him as he was shoving it all in his face, so there was no 'putting back' or gouging finger marks. Simply a missing corner. The cupcake worked well, and it is a moot point, anyways, because that part of the cake didn't get eaten, anyways. Virtually no one showed up. So...now we have a ton of cake to get rid of. )=
If you have lots of cake that you can't get rid of then just cut it into slices and cling wrap them separately, pop them in the freezer and you will have cake for lunches for a while.

Thanks for the idea. My husband would probably like that. After I divvy up to everyone I can, I'll do that with the left overs.
AOh okay ladidilee :) i was under the impression the cake was for a customer:) I know it can be challenging with kids around.:)

Pretty much. This is the child that if he wants something, will stop at nothing to get it. I have found him munching on snacks that *had* been put on top of the fridge. He is 2 and a half, and only 25 lbs, but I can't keep anything away from him. I should have known better than to turn my back on him.
