i love her style i nearly fell asleep watching her class-- i had no patience to finish watching it I'm so bad
she's a great dancer and a breath of fresh air caker --- two outa three ain't bad
but her stuff is fabulous lovely eye candy
I guess I'm in the minority. I have enough respect for the original designer that I ask permission or give credit. It takes a long time to come up with designs so I don't feel right about copying them without giving credit. I know others think it's dumb but I've never been turned down and it builds a friend;y relationship with other cakers. jmho.

IF someone does something really original, and IF I am hired to copy it exactly, which rarely happens, I'll put 'based ona so-and-so design" if I do post it somewhere. For the most part, though, there's nothing that original that I feel like I need to credit someone for. There was someone having a hissy fit online recently because someone had copied her (unoriginal) design, then she eventually said that she had originally copied it from something else. Okaaaaay...
I've seen original designs that have been copied and entered in contests, and that's low. I do original designs for display cakes and if someone took one of those it would be pretty obvious to me. I'd be a little irritated but I'd also feel free to post "Oh I love what you did with my design" on any spce for comments, hahaha! If they used one to enter in a contest, though, I'd be mad, I think you should use your own creativity for situations like that.
I had one local baker copy one of my cakes once, and that chapped me but she had already plagiarized text from my website, so I had her on my radar. Glad to say that she's out of business now.
it's kind of like dress making -- if you make one it's got all the similar properties of most all the other dresses out there and you can full blown copy anyone/anything else you want -- then if you go ahead and eat it...
like if you made one from a pattern, made a dress, you wouldn't necessarily specifically credit mccall's or vogue you'd say i made this dang dress not that it's a big secret you used a pattern it's just not relevant--
idk and coming from the wilton yearbook era of cake deco it's a non factor in general-- i did a kerry vincent and sure enough someone called me on it--had it for my avatar on another cake site and so i gave credit--but it's obviously her design if you know it--
but all this stuff's been done before if you know where to find it-- y'know it gets dusted off, spiffed up and tweaked but it's not new--"nothing new under the sun" as the saying goes
I used to get all butt hurt when someone copied my cakes, but not anymore.
No one copies ugly cakes, so I take it as a compliment.

There is a difference between using ruffles on a cake and using the exact same shape, colors, ruffles, accents and topper. I'm also against plagiarizing and copying homework although many of my schoolmates found it completely acceptable. Why would someone be against giving credit? It's not hard to type a 2 line sentence and it's the NICE thing to do. Idk, those are your issues, not mine.
What if the copied cake turn out like one of these : http://www.cakewrecks.com/home/2014/5/14/tonight-at-the-lucky-stardust-lounge.html ....with the caption "inpired by (insert your name here)"

i think that i have and do give credit sometimes as i have stated in the post you quoted--at the same time i also feel it is not 100% necessary--
best to you, bilbo

Different standards I s'pose to give credit after being called on it. Have a g8 day.

yes i think you're right --she thought i was using kerry's photograph out of her book as my avatar which would have been wrong but it was my cake and my photograph -- that's how i became aware that that was important to some cake people so i was careful after that--since all through the 70's, 80's, 90's it's what we did and still do copy each other--one of 'the goals' was to make a cake as nice as ones in the wilton yearbooks --wilton tells you how & what to do AND BUY to get those results--we didn't credit them for that per se
i have a cake friend who got a chance to have her work in a big magazine spread--she chose her copy of a famous decorator's very unusual most identifiable cake to have in this big nation wide world wide magazine spread--this is not unusual or untoward in the least--the original decorator was not mentioned if memory serves--she was playing to her local market --
and i found another tree cake with an earlier copyright and none of those people credited each other so i am in good company

good point
It still takes some skill and not just a little talent to copy something well, let alone exactly. ( I can't do it well even when I try )

You're comparing cake copying to cheating for grades in school?

Pretty much! I see mine every once in awhile, and the last one was tweaked a bit, and I thought it was an improvement on my original. So that was pretty flattering to see it done not only well, but better, in my opinion.
I have definitely been inspired by your work.

Over Five thousand views on a thread because people want to copy the flower. Isn't this what the forum is for.
Only someone who does not photograph and place it in any type of public forum will be able to keep their creations from being copied. Perhaps there is a legal angle that I'm missing.

You're not missing anything, people are silly about this kind of stuff. Especially since the "signature flower" isn't something they invented in the first place, but whatever.
I've now copyrighted this thread so you all better stop writing on it or I'll sue!
Well if you sue, I'd get to meet you and try some of your cake......so there's always the bright side!!
