For those of you that provide "kitchen cakes" for more servings, how are those presented to the venue?

I am traveling quite a ways with the wedding cake.  For the extra cakes, can I simply bake them, leave them in the pans, and ice the tops?  Of course they would not be "presented" at the reception.  Transporting would be so much safer than turning out and icing.

Thanks!

How would you get your pans back? I transport kitchen cakes in a cake box so the sides are all iced, if you only ice in the pan, it will only have icing on top, no?

I think sheet cakes in the kitchen are generally made to mimic the slices coming off the main cake so guests are non the wiser. So if the main cake is two layer with blue icing, the sheet cakes mimic that. It's easier since the icing doesn't have to be perfectly smooth.

Some of us are not really fancy or formal.  my friend wanted an additional huge sheet cake, because she said that everyone will want big pieces of my cake.  She was sending some of it off to her grooms co-workers at the fire department after the wedding.  I made a huge half-sheet cake for her, but didn't worry about decorating it.

I just make giant star tip  poofs of icing and put some simple candy coating snowflakes on top, to go with her theme.  poofs of icing on all sides, put it on disposable boards, in a box - so nothing to return.

The cake sat out on the food table as everyone served themselves.  Not everyone is rich, formal, or has kitchen servers - perhaps to some wedding cake is a dessert item, and to others it's just a small token piece. IDK

Everyone may not be rich or formal...but serving a cake in a pan with only the top iced at a wedding is the extreme of informal....your cake was very nicely presented!

The wedding is for my niece, so I will be there, and probably serving the cake.  Getting the pans back is no problem!

The wedding is on the hillside of my sister's property in the TN mountains.  The reception is in their barn, which they have turned into a party barn.  The dinner is a bbq buffet.  They are having swing dancing lessons between the ceremony and reception!  so formality is not a big deal either, from what I have been told!

Thanks, all, for the input!

From what you're describing I would think it would be ok to do that then. Cake will not be displayed and seems like the wedding is much more your nieces personal taste and not the "usual" super elegant extravaganza a lot of brides strive for. I say if you're ok with doing it that way then it's probably fine. If you're really wondering about it still though just ask your niece. HTH
