Start by googling what it takes to becomes legal in your area...

Any question you have about business has probably been discussed several times on here, and the advice is really really good. Just use the search function and type out your question. I promise there's tons of reading.

Hi Mocharella,
I agree that you need to see what the local laws are for your area. In Missouri where I live, I can sell to individuals out of my home, but must use a commercial kitchen if I'm selling retail, say to an area cafe or something like that.
Good luck with your business.

You would be working under what is called a "Cottage Food Law"  Most states have one and they can vary greatly from one state to the next. Here is a good place to start

http://agr.wa.gov/foodanimal/cottagefoodoperation/

They should have a FAQ's page as well.

I am doing the same thing in Michigan . Good Luck

FYI - When we sell directly to the consumer, it's called retail. Selling to an area cafe, as you mentioned above, is selling to a business, which is wholesale.

Hi MimiFix,

Thanks for the clarification regarding retail vs. wholesale. It is retail when we sell directly to a consumer and wholesale when selling to a business. I totally skipped that part of the equation when saying that a commercial kitchen is needed to be able to sell to a business (wholesale for us, but those businesses are, in and of themselves, retail establishments.)

I apologize for the confusion. Thanks again.
