UFO cake... Help!!!

I need to make a ufo cake. I have seen a few online but none of the photos i can find are anything close to what Im trying to make. This image is what i would like the cake to look like.
Anyone have any advice on how i could achieve this? I am a beginner and still learning. I was thinking of using a small stainless steel mixing bowl to bake the round parts but how would i make the middle flat part?

Oh yeah, fabulous classic UFO! That's gonna be a smashing cake- though a time consuming one to make...

I would suggest making it mostly false and having just the top dome as cake. I would go for making it from cake boards, a half Styrofoam ball and some dowels.

Make the structure and attach fondant using melted chocolate so that it sticks well! It might help to not glue the legs in- make the holes in the half ball and mark on the legs where you need to cover up to then take them out, cover the underside of the UFO in fondant and wrap the legs in a thin piece of fondant separately (attached with choc). leave to dry overnight then glue the legs in and work on the top side.

Bake your cake in a pyrex bowl lined with strips of baking paper.

Can't wait to see it- hope you post a pic icon_smile.gif

Thank you so much for your reply. I think i will have a practice go and see how it turns out. If i am successful i will definitely post a picture.
Do you think i could use rice crispy treats in place of a Styrofoam ball?

You're very welcome, rice krispie treats would be great! it's a bit more fiddly thats all, you'll need to make the bottom dome around the legs, if you make a nice neat rkt dome and then poke the legs into it it will fall apart or if it's cooled down will just be impossible!

Attach the rkt to the boards using melted chocolate else it could very easily fall off when tou turn it over, and I find it helpts to attach fondant to rkt with melded choc too.

Have fun!

RKT recipe (just in case) 10 oz marshmallows in the microwave for 2 mins full power, stir in 3 cups rice cereal. wet hands/tools with water before handling, it's less sticky that way!
