umm hi, 

i really want to go to micheals cake decorating classes but it says its for "Adults" what exactly does it mean by adult? im going to be 16 soon, so does that mean im an adult or do i have to wait? and reading other threads i saw that the first course you dont buy anything? so basically they give you everything? and in courses through 2-4 is when you start buying? also when does it start (2013)? i cant find it on the website :/ please help :)

I haven't taken a Michaels class but I did take a Wilton course at a local craft store.  16 would be considered an adult.  They're trying to eliminate Mom's who drop their children off at the store and consider it a babysitting service.  Plus, small children don't have the hand control to squeeze an icing bag until they are a teen.  At the class I took, they also said that you didn't need to come with any equipment, but part of the class was taken up with a tour of the cake aisle in the store and you leave with a list of things you'll be needing for the next few classes.  After all, the reason stores allow Wilton to hold classes there is because they hope you'll buy things from them.  Different Michaels Stores hold different classes at different times so you need to call them and ask when the class will be held - and sign up.  It's very inspirational and will get you motivated to try things at home on your own.

alright so there is no other way but to call them? im more of a text person and get shy over phone, do i just ask for their class scheduals? 

What I find helpful is to write out what I want to say.  Like:  Hi, I'm interested in taking your cake decorating class, can you tell me when it's being held.  Take that information down then say thank you and hang up.  When off the phone decide if it's on a week you are available to take it then call them back and tell them you'd like to sign up for the cake decorating class and ask if you can sign up over the phone or do you need to come to the store to sign up and how much money is needed to hold the class.  In other words, write what you want to say down and call as many times as needed until you get all the information you need.

AI have taken classes at Michaels, you will need to purchase course 1 box set, they usually have deals for their courses and or coupons, check their site or their weekly flyer. You will have a lot of fun!

AI took Wilton course 1 at Michaels, you need to buy the course 1 student kit, you'll need to either make the Wilton decorating icing or buy some pre made (if you have a 50% off coupon the large bucket should last the whole 4 weeks), and then there will be a list each week of Wilton tools that they want you to buy for the following week, ranging from a cake icer tip to a turntable. You'll also need to bake a couple of cakes and either bake or buy some sugar cookies.

I only took one course at Michaels because I didn't like how they packed us all into a tiny room, and the instructor was poor quality. I took the other courses at Joann where the instructor was much better and the class sizes were smaller.

Hi, i teach wilton at michaes, and they don,t give anything away. First course, you have to bring in cookies, buy a can of icing(i show in class how to make icing and ice a cake in the class.) I show all that i need to for first class and then tell them what to bring , etc. for second class. It is in the books that we give out first class. They will give you a syllabus when you sign up. You have to go to store and sign up and pay. Then you will know everything to bring to first class. I teach 14 and older. If someone is 12-13, their mom or some adult has to sign up also. That is michaels rule and wiltons. I am not going to teach anyone without a receipt. I get paid for who i teach on first night of class. Some moms try that and then they are getting all my info free. I make sure everyone is counted for on sign up sheet ,etc. We always have a fun class. I bring extra stuff always so my classes go good. I enjoy all that i do with the students. I make sure the class is fun and informative. I tell them the first night  , i don,t know everything(not a know it all) but i know a lot. Been decorating for 18 yrs. and paid a lot of money to take lots of classes and also ices convention each year. Some people(i don,t like that) sign up right before class time and they are the ones that don,t have a thing in their hands to work with. I use to share everything with these people, but not anymore. Anyone should know not to go to any type of class empty handed. lol!!! I hope you enjoy if you sign up. WE all have fun and the students make new friends. icer101 do they require instructors to have a license or certificate of some sort to teach the class?

I filled out a form on line. A Wilton supervisor called me. I had to send her pics of my cakes. I had to fill out form at Michaels , talk to manager, etc. and was hired. This was 8 yrs. ago. I do know that you still fill out form on line. Things might all be the same. If  a student of mine is interested, then tell wilton manager, the students has to mention my name, etc.  If hired, i then get a bonus. Havent, had that to happen lately. If you know a teacher, start with her also. hth

AThe only qualification you need to teach Wilton is being able to read the syllabus book out loud, at least that was my experience.

AThey have special offers for the classes, I paid $10 last fall. The course kit costs $35 but you can use a 40-50% off coupon on it. Then you need to supply all the other items like the cookies, cake and frosting.

Just call Michaels and ask, they will be able to give you all that info better than anyone here can, since sometimes things like that vary from store to store. For instance, I saw our Michaels advertising the course for $15, but the one in the next city over was $35.

(I was busy emptying all the Michael's out of a mold I wanted, haha, I don't usually keep track of their course prices)

Walk in and ask.  Seriously.  This may be a bit "Mama-ish" for you, but the world is yours for the taking...those that inquire, get.  If it's something you are interesting in, find out what you need to know.  I may sound overbearing...I just had a similar conversation with my God Daughter who just graduated from High School so it's still fresh on my mind.  Put yourself out there.  Ask questions.  Do NOT be afraid to be everything you can be.  :-)  The worst thing anyone can say to you is no.  Then make your plan to make that "no" a "yes"!   

That said, I took my first Wilton class with a girl who worked there, (16) and a mom with her daughter (10).  As long as you can get yourself to the class and produce the products you need...if I remember right a  few cookies, some cupcakes and a cake, you're in.  You will have to buy the kit.

I use some great online classes ( Pretty Witty Cakes ) that are always on, I don't have to go anywhere and I can order the products for the class from the website.

AI actually thought it was really easy, especially since it didn't crash on my ancient iPad. (many websites crash my iPad since it is so old.)

I don,t know what a syllabus book is???? We have class books for each course. I have never read it to the class. I know what i am doing, and make the class a lot of fun. I go way beyond wilton in my knowledge and share some of my expensive knowledge with the students. They love it. I learn from some of them lol!! That is what my classes are all about, sharing and helping each other. They do run specials all the time. You can call michaels and or go on line to know everything about the classes and now you can sign up on line. The syllabus is what they give the students to let them know what to bring to first class. I then go over the rest. Of course the book tells them to.Some of the never read that part. lol!!! they ask me. That is ok. We go over that at the end of each class.
