How do I stick this to my cake???...

Hi Cakers!

 

I am making a cake covered in Buttercream icing.  I want to attach a pleated fondant band around the middle of the cake horizontally.

 

What is the best way to stick this to the BC icing so that it stays and will not fall or slip off.

 

In the past I have used melted chocolate to attach small fondant decorations.  I assume I would do the same.

 

I hope someone reading this has done this before I can lend me some pointers and not to do's.

I have put a thin coating of shortening on fondant ribbons to attach to the middle of the cake with no problems.

I use water.

Water???   Ya'll think that water is strong enough to hold a fondant ribbon that is about 2 1/2" wide and 14" long?

 

Just making sure....

I don't ever use anything but water on anything. I have a water brush, or I use a regular paintbrush, with a little bowl of water. I have used it for draping, and large cherubs, both on buttercream. This is fondant stuck on American buttercream, with all hi ratio shortening (bleh! but the bride insisted) with only water.

Remeber, it is not just water, it is water drawing out the sugars, making syrup, that sticks it.

I pour a little cup of vodka and a little cup of water...drink the vodka then stick the fondant on with water...lol j/k

BatterUp, I don't have any vodka. Can I use gin?

Those cherubs look like little Yodas on my phone screen..lmao. I know they're not, but it looked like it at first. Pretty cake!

And that's exactly right, it makes a bit of a sugar glue if you will. Too much will cause it to slide off though, so less is best.

Of course..the trick is to use just enough so that it looks FABULOUS but not so much that you see 2 of them...lol All kidding aside, OP...what they said

Not everyone knows who Doc McStuffins is yet so I'm showing the character and how the cake relates to her. A smaller version of Doc was added to the top of the cake at the party. No pic of that though!

 

 

This is a buttercream cake that I adhered a fondant 'skirt ' to using additional buttercream.  It worked fine.  I put the thin fondant purple band around the top to hide the edges of the top of the skirt.   It's funny but they put the cake in a VERY hot location for several hours and the only problem they had was the little thin band that kind of drooped.  The skirt stayed put.  I use real butter BC so it was very soft...but it held up.   Make sure you deliver a cold cake!  If it starts out good and hard, it does help hold things better.

I love these cakes. I wish I could hypnotize customers into ordering what I want to make! lol..Working with a client now trying to nudge her towards a 3D fire breathing dragon. I know her well so I know she has the personality type that might balk at a $600 cake at first but then when she realizes NO ONE else will have that cake her checkbook comes out. She has personally seen many of my woodworking projects and has complete faith in my skills...Not too mention I have cooked 4 star dinners for her and her family....wish me luck...
