How is not homemade if you use a shaped pan? Round is a shape. Square is a shape. Every pan is a shaped pan. What does it matter if it is elmo, a dog, a bear, a bowl, etc?

That's why I said "in my opinion" I believe that if you work hard enough you can have the skills to do all those things.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, and there's nothing wrong with acquiring new skills, but the skill that will help you the most when running a business is knowing when to delegate.

To be honest, when I went out and photographed the roses in the back yard, GIMP'd them, and had a sheet of edible printing made, it was cheating, just as it was cheating for me to hand-pipe a picture of a rose onto a previous cake for my mother, but I honestly don't have the time or the energy to learn how to pipe roses, and the dense, hand-mixed, non-whipped BC I use has a tendency to slump anyway. But I'll do anything, within the bounds of what's food-safe, and what's within my budget, to get as close to the cake I have in my head as possible.

She/he said they didn't do it because they FEEL it is cheating. A feeling isn't a statement of fact. I don't think they were intending to put anyone else's work down. To each their own. BTW...what is GIMP'd? I am sure your cake was beautiful and it was exactly what YOU wanted and I bet your mother loved it.

EDIT: Oh...that was before I read this "I'm not knocking the people do but it is my opinion that if you don't know how to do something that you need to do whatever you can to learn how to do it. You can not call yourself a "baker" or a "cake decorator" if you take cheap shortcuts." If it said "I" rather than "You" I would stand by my last statement. But this sounds a little preachy

AEverything I said was my opinion. If you don't like it I'm sorry. That's why it's an opinion. By the way I am a girl. I'm also 19 years old and I have a 3 year old son who is deaf and has cerebral palsy. What's funny is that I see older people that are supposed to be "more experienced" bakers up here posting questions about stuff that is like cake 101. I'm a busy person. I take care of my son and I still took the time to learn and to practice practice practice in order to be able to have the skill to do all the things people ask me to do. My whole point is, don't go out and buy something to take the easy way out. Take the time to learn your skill and give someone the best you can. If someone expects you and trusts you enough to make them a homemade cake, then you should learn how to do it right without going to Walmart and buying pre made stuff. What's wrong with being able to say you did it 100% by yourself?!?!

ANot sure what your gender and age, and your son's physical disabilities have to do with this thread.

Other people's opinions are worth just as much as yours.

ANever said they weren't. And another lady early said "he or she" referring to me so I was clearifying my gender. The point with my son and my age is that I have worked hard to learn what I have. If I can do it, no one else has an excuse.

Why don't you just do what you think is right for YOU. And quit telling other people how to do their business....because it is none of YOUR business. Quit being so self righteous.

AThere seems to be a false dichotomy here...there is plenty of room between 100% homemade (growing and milling your own flour, raising your own cows and churning your own butter, etc.) and buying a premade cake from Walmart for resale. Just about all of us fall somewhere between these two extremes.

Again, it's perfectly valid for you to hold this opinion, but then again it's also perfectly valid to discuss that opinion here.

AAgain the Internet proves to be a true place of drama. One person expresses their opinion and belief and everyone freaks out. If you don't like it honestly I do not care. If anyone wants to give people half ass work that is up to you. I will know that I did my best. I will no longer contribute to this post. It is not worth arguing with people that try to tell me that I'm not intitled to my own opinion. Newbe86 I wish you luck. Don't let people scare you as far as legal things go. Do your research and do what you think is best. I'm glad my advice helped and I hope your Elmo turns out cute :)

I'm sorry, but if you use the cheap shortcut of buying flour at the store instead of growing and milling it yourself, you've lost all my respect. ;)

Oh crap Jason.

I buy my flour and sugar, don't have hens or a chocolate plantation, I don't hand-fertilise vanilla orchids to produce pods (I buy them....), don't milk my own cows and churn my own butter, I don't have a garden for growing carrots, strawberries and raspberries. I used coconut last week, but alas I don't have any coconut palms on my property.......

I am shocked and appalled. Your lack of homemade ingredients makes any cake you create no better than a Walmart cake. Is it really so difficult to create a micro-climate on your property that can support growing coconut palms?

AAwwww please guys enough, all i see when I come on CC these days are people arguing with each other- whatever happened to respecting everybody's opinions? You guys are soo helpful and have been in the business long enough to give some top advice- so people should take that on board whether its something you want to hear or not,if you don't like it let it roll off your back if you do say thankyou. But people don't have the right to be NASTY- its not that hard. I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular I'm just saying we don't want yet another thread being locked,if I did offend anyone please accept my apologies xx

AOh, I wouldn't actually say anything offensive or hurtful, just sarcastic and maybe funny. But there is a level of sensitivity on CC lately that seems to turn conversations ugly. I rather enjoy a bit of sarcasm in my day. It's unfortunate that some people don't value others' opinions - or humor- at times. Back to the thread; I hope OP's cake turns out lovely, but please keep in mind, for all of us in the industry, to adhere to copyright laws & charge appropriately for your work & time.

AI came on here looking for advice and opinions of other bakers. Just because I'm not "professional" doesn't mean I'm not good at it. It seems like there is a lot of positives but some of the bs is unnecessary. Anyway, I appreciate those who offer help and I'll continue to learn and open my business in time.

lol. Sarcastic and funny is my take on it as well! It's sometimes hard to read people over the internet, especially when you don't know them.

Yes, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion. But saying "You can not call yourself a "baker" or a "cake decorator" if you take cheap shortcuts." is a bit much.

AI agree. While I may decide the best route for my business is to bake from scratch, make my own figures, etc., I buy fondant. Does that make me a faker baker? :-) But to each his own. I don't judge you, so please do not judge me. (is this the time for like holding hands and singing in a circle now?)

HAHA! Faker baker. I think I may use that. Yes, holding hands and singing is the best way to show we all support, love, and respect each other. Hmmm....what song should we sing?
