Start Up Costs And Supplies?
Business By meganmarie27 Updated 17 Jun 2013 , 6:06am by kaylawaylalayla
When I finish college I want to start a storefront bakery and I was wondering roughly how much it would cost to start it. Also supplies I'll need and how much of everything I should get.
AThat's going to depend.
By the way, what is your major?
Start up costs will vary according to region. What is the lease? Can you purchase used equipment? Does the space need a build out? Do you already own some equipment? What kind of products will you make?
For example: if you are making bread or doughnuts you will need equipment that a cupcake business won't need.
AI'm gonna go a step farther on this one. When I initially priced everything, I did lots of research. I contacted an insurance agent, priced out a lease, contacted vendors to price ingredients, scoured auctions to get costs of equipment.
Start by making a list of everything you want to make to open the doors. Then cost everything (ovens to packaging) you need to make them.
I know you want a nice easy answer. There isn't one. Only you know the area, rent, and supplies you will need.
AHere are some SWAGs for startup costs:
Legal home-based bakery: $1-2K Renting an existing commercial kitchen: $2-4K Opening a storefront: $20-120K
$4,000 - $400,000 depending on what area you'll be opening in and how big you want to go. Your answer will be in your business plan... this might help:
AHey jason I see you with lots of good info on here a lot, I'm working on opening soon. I was a accounting major, but I love to bake I do this for family and their friends that see my cakes or find out I can make cheesecakes for last 6 yr... so the mixer and oven have me on 'wow how much' how big of a oven would a starter need? Mostly bday half sheets can't wait to do a wedding cake. As for mixers the k. aid 7qt. Is what I have my eye on... I burn up so many mixers lol time to get a bigger one.
what do you want to sell and how do you want to sell it? what year in college are you? (just curious lol)
if you know where you would like to open a store front, is there a building available? is it already a kitchen?
if not you will need building and zoning permits.
