how do I make a shark...plz help

Hi everyone! !I have had a request for a Nemo cake which is pretty simple. 8inch round with a big manta ray on top made of fondant. With nemo toy keepsakes on top of the manta ray. Now (here's the part I need help with) the child loves bruce the shark in finding nemo and now wants mw to add a shark to the cake. So the mouth of the shark over the cake. It doesnt have to be real and can be done out of either fondant or styrofoam but I have NO IDEA how im going to achieve that...can any1 help me please??

Do you mean that the head of the shark is going to be bigger than the actual cake?

 

In that case, could you carve the shark out of cake, and make the nemo cake a smaller cake? maybe a half height 6 inch?

 

Or, you might need to carve the shark's mouth from RKT or styrofoam. I'd just do the top jaw of the shark rather than the whole thing. Could you just have the head an jaws of the shark coming out of the board next to the cake rather than over the top of it?

I agree with mcaulir about only doing the top part of the jaw coming out of the cake. I would also put a shark fin on top of the cake a couple inches back from the head. I myself would use RKT since its more forgiving than styrofoam, easier to add and take away to get the shape right. Not to mention the first thing I bet the little boy is going to do is grab the shark and want to take a bite out of him, so edible is the way to go!

Could you go for a larger board and have the shark mouth coming up from 'under' the cake... if you google "jaws cake" there are a couple like that.

When I made a shark coming out of the top of the cake I used RKT.  When I made the RKT and they were still hot I actually molded the shape then so I didn't have to carve.  Then I covered the whole RKT in buttercream and then covered it in fondant.  HTH!

I made a shark cake a few years ago - not in my gallery.  I used the football shaped pan twice to make the shark body.  That may be too much cake for your needs!  But I used gum for teeth jutting out (you know the old fashioned chicklet-type - not the gum strips!) so it looked like pointy teeth.   It was for a family party but everyone loved the gum!  You could probably incorporate that even if you do "jaws only"!  Good luck!

I recently finished an exploded fondant shark cake. Exploding fondant was a learning experience, but the shark wasn't difficult. I made him out of RKT and covered in fondant. The teeth were gum paste held with melted white chocolate and the shells were made of fondant.  I used petal dust to color everything. I'm not sure of the picture in my mind of your design, but I figure you can pick and choose anything that might give you a little of the help you're seeking.

Milkmaid42 ur cake looks fabtastic keep it up. Im yet to make my first exploding cake...dreading it tbh lol

I am glad that you found RKT good to work with. I'd like to see a pic of the cake if you could. Thanks for the compliments. We are always learning, aren't we? 

 

And no, the shells at the bottom are ones I made of fondant and dusted. I used purchased shells from a craft store and made molds from them with Amazing Mold Putty. You can really use your imagination when coloring them, or use photos for inspiration. They are one of my favorite things to make.

Hi everyone...I would love to post a pic but I just think because im very new in baking and decorating my cakes are way toooo amateur to post on here...feel abit embarassed of my cakes compared to the floods of talent on here!! P.s I ended up takin the shark off...left it with nemo and friends and made a manta ray out of fondant instead...looked much nicer
