I've been asked to do a first birthday cake.  They haven't asked for a smash cake, but if they do, I was wondering...do you charge extra for a smash cake, or do you throw it in?

For example:

"How much for a birthday cake?"

"It'll be $??.??."

"I'd like a smash cake as well."

"That'll be an extra $??.??."

or

"No problem...I'll include that in the birthday cake price."

Alternatively, if they ask for a birthday cake AND a smash cake, do you quote them separately, or give them one price for both?

Just curious what others do.

If their order is over $100..I throw in the smash cake.   But with very simple decorations.  If their cake is under $100...then I charge $10..again, for a simple deco.  If they want all the bells & whistles on the smash...I charge extra.

I worked at a bakery that gave all smash cakes free with the purchase of any price 1st birthday cake....all very simply decorated...but they always had inventory to pull from...I do not, so I charge most of the time.  

I always break out all costs for my orders so they can see what everything costs....and they can delete item(s) if they want.

I have given them a verbal "rough" quote for the cake (under $100) so will wait and see if they want to go ahead, and if so, if they want a smash cake as well. Smash cakes are a fairly new thing here, and I don't know if they had even considered having one.

Lorillc....that is (normally) a small (6" single) cake for the birthday child to have to him/herself.    They eat/destroy it.  I wish they were around when my son turned one.   

AI offer a comokimenatary simply decorated smash cake with purchase of birthday cake or 2 dozen cupcakes.

AI don't have any idea what auto correct was thinking. That should be complimentary.

I live in such a small rural area that if the cake is $65 or more I do the smash cake for free. If the order is less than $65 or if they want the smash cake for a photo shoot I charge $10.00.

I make them in a 4" round pan.  That's enough cake to destroy . . .

AI usually offer a jumbo cupcake with minimal decorations as babies "smash". cake. Free if they are also purchasing a cake over $100. Then offer custom smash cupcake topper (for pictures) that can be removed before given to baby. That is always extra charge depending on complexity of design, usually starting at $20.

LOL... oh my goodness,  I  had no idea what it was, I thought it was some type of recipe.   I wish I would have  thought about something like that when my kids were young, instead of eating around what they destroyed. 

I offer them free with a paid order for birthday cake or cupcakes.  I make either a single layer 6" round or jumbo cupcake.

I have had people call and ask for just the smash cake.  I don't offer it but have told them if they really want it they need to pay my minimum order fee ($50)
 

AWe itemize the smash cake separately based on the cost of making the cake, just like any other product.

I'm a hobby caker.  Most of the cakes I have done have been for relatives and close friends, although I have done a couple I've charged for.  This client is an acquaintance. They saw the cake I did for a common relative's baby shower, which I did for free, and asked if I could do a cake for their babe's first birthday. They knew it wouldn't be free, but I'm not sure if they're familiar with cake prices and may not have been prepared for the price I quoted them.  They didn't mention a smash cake, but when I gave them my rough quote, I asked if they wanted a smash cake as well.

One of our local grocery stores offers a free cake (2-layer buttercreamed sheet cake with minimal decorations) for a child's first birthday.  The potential client is aware of this and might go that route - that's up to them and I'm ok with that.  However, if they also think a smash cake would be a cool idea, I'm happy to do one, but I will charge appropriately - obviously more than the $10 I was thinking of if I was also doing the main birthday cake.

I really want to do their cake, though.  I have some great ideas, and the more I do, the more I learn and the better I get.  But, as my husband keep reminding me, "You can't do everyone a free cake, you know!!!"
