That's kind of a hard question, do you want to start off with just friends and family or do you want to start a legitimate business because the laws vary from state to state about making cakes from home.
I got a business name first from the state for doing business as, then I got a sellers permit to sell at fairs and farmers markets. To get my home up to code in my state would have cost me an arm and a leg so I rented a commercial kitchen.
I am quite sure others will chime in soon as to the pros and cons of doing it from your home.
1. Find out if its even legal to sell cakes made in your home kitchen. Your Health Department or Dept of Ag can tell you.
2. Find out if your zoning will allow you to have a business in your home.
3. Find out if your HOA if you have one will allow a business in your home.
4. Register your name with your state.
5. Incorporate to protect your personal assets.
6. Buy liability insurance
7. Register with your local and state taxing authorities.
8. Set up wholesale buying accounts with suppliers.
9. Set up a website and/or Facebook page.
10. Bake.

AI would say that before you register your name or spend any money, write a business plan. You have to have some idea of what you want to do and how you're going to get there
