Clueless about Wedding consultations

So, I've just gotten my license & am trying to figure out consulations. Where is the best place to have the consultation? What questions to ask? Also do i talk to the bride before the consultation & bring sketches of different cakes according to what they like or do they tell me what they like at the consultation? Do I give a quote at the consultation? This is racking my brain lol. Please help.... I need some general guidance here. Thanks in advance!

Would you be willing to do a simple google search on the topic? Include 'cake tasting' 'cake central' in the search criteria. There are numerous threads discussing this.

Thanks, I'll do that. What I did search only came up with a few websites & it gave me info that brides should ask the decorator lol.

This is a difficult question to answer. Consults are one o my favorite parts, & I consider it an artform. Over many years, I have devised techniques and questions to help me determine how to design a cake for a bride as well as make her feel comfortable.

The basics of course are the fundamentals regarding the cake: where (if you know the venue ask specifically where in the room), when does it start, how many people, what type of reception (sit down/buffet), are they serving ETOH, do you have something specific in mind, what's the overall feel/look you want to achieve...

It's never "just cake!"

You may get a cake for $way to little but you won't get this cake!

We usually avoid consultations altogether. Ideas and sketches can be handled by email and/or phone calls, and tastings are provided in a to-go package just like any other order. At the beginning of the process you can provide a rough quote to make sure you are in the same ballpark price-wise, then refine the quote once you get more details.

@ DeliciousDesserts if it is a sit down style Wedding and you are the one cutting the cake do you charge extra to serve the guests at the table or is that something their caterer does? Also if it is buffet style do you just place the cut slices at a designated table or is that something the caterer should have to do also?

Sorry I have so many questions lol

Generally the staff at the venue will cut and serve the cake. If a customer wants us to cut and serve the cake it would be a continuation of our normal setup fee of $1/minute.

The caterer almost always cuts the cake in my area of the world.

If they prefer I cut (& I'm available), I charge a per slice fee of $2. Regardless of reception style, the cake is usually taken to the back for cutting. It is then either served for seated, passed on trays, or set on a special table.
