Haha! When I first went to take a cake class, my reasoning was so I could frost a cake without swearing...as much! Lol!

Hey Steph,

Sorry this is such a late response, I thought I replied to your posts immediately after reading them, how absent-minded of me!

Cupcakes - yes, I just level them, spread on some frosting and place the fondant discs on. I haven't taken any baking/cake decorating classes before, learned everything I know from all the wonderfully clever and generous people in the cake community right here on CC, YouTube and various blogs. Still lots and lots to learn :)

Here's the link to a very helpful thread here by the late Rylan who took the time to compile a long list of tutorials. Hope you find them useful :)

For future reference, if you want the fondant to harden more (not necessarily for eating) you can make a 50/50 blend of fondant and gum paste for a great modeling material.  It sets up firmer because of the gum paste, and the fondant keeps it softer a little longer for modeling.

Some people just add some Tylose, CMC or Cum Tex to the fondant, but I prefer the addition of straight gum paste because: a)I have gum paste on hand all the time, no need to buy yet another ingredient; and b) there is that little less working on it to get it all conditioned right, and no need to worry if you have too much or too little Tylose, etc.  Just knead together two equal size lumps of fondant and gum paste and go to it!

I made the faces. They are pretty easy to make with balls and then just flatten the top for eyes a bit and give a rounder shape for the nose and mouth.

I didn't make the rest of the body but as long as you make individual parts and stick toothpicks in them to join them later on, it should be ok.

I just finished working on some dinosaurs with all body parts and thats what i did. Just put something in support while they dry like my dinos faces when joined with the body were pretty heavy so i put support under them till they dried.

Make sure to use gum paste and fondant! and Do take out any seams you might see or they will end up as cracks ...lessons from dinos :)

good luck
