I've been asked to make a wedding cake with two of the tiers being covered in lace. The bride was very specific that she did not want the cakes covered in fondant.  I explained that the lace would need to be made out of something.  So she agreed the lace could be fondant, gumpaste or something else.  My problem is, all of the cakes I've seen have been first covered in fondant then with some sort of lace decoration.  I need to know how I can add lace to buttercream covered cakes.  Also, if you know of any video tutorials out there showing how to do this, will you please post a link?  Another question, I thought about using royal icing to pipe a lace design on the cakes.  I would need some sort of guide to go by though, any thoughts on that?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice you have to offer!!

AYou can try this its buttercream on buttercream. You would need to wash the stencil between every side and dry it well and that doesn't cover the top of the cakes. I really don't know how easy this is to do she just makes it look very easy. Another thing to consider is that the buttercream have to be two diffrent colors for this to show up but an ivory and white would be pretty.

You can just pipe the lace on using buttercream on a buttercream-covered cake...Here's a blog entry I did that shows how to make it easier to see the pattern http://acaketorememberva.blogspot.com/2011/01/piping-lace-on-cakes.html

You are very welcome. You'll have to let me know if you use it. I would love to see that on a wedding cake that someone from here has done. HAPPY BAKING. :-D
