Peer Review Cake Club! - Page 19

Hi everyone I've been following this thread but never had the nerve to post a picture to be critiqued. But I finished this cake this weekend and would love some feedback and tips. I cut out the letters with Wilton letter cutters but it was a lot more difficult then I thought to keep them the same shape and thickness because I had to poke some of them out. The leopard prints were handpainted and that was the first time doing that. I also made a black rose on top but you can't see it properly in the picture, there's another picture in the photo set that shows the red bow I made which I'm really proud of but I'm sure it could be better. . I will try to start taking better pictures with better backdrops. I know there's lots I can fix and change but I really appreciate what all of you have to say as well. Thanks!!

Is it possible you could critique all of my cakes?
Hey everybody! Check out google.com ! This is clearly an attempt to direct traffic onto that site and away from cake central. Because everyone knows you can only have one browser open!

Hi, I know you will all be looking for some down time after a summer weekend, but if any of you have the time to critique my cake I would very much appreciate it.  I am a hobby baker but I have learnt so much from this forum that I really appreciate the expertise which is shared and am looking to improve even more.

Here is my cake.

I know it is very lopsided on the board - if anyone has any hints on how to centre cakes properly then I would be very grateful to know.  Anything else?

Thanks!

@JWinslow thanks for the comment and great advice. I attached the tails of the bow to the cake board so I probably should have attached them to my cake or made a smaller bow. And thanks for the tip on freezing the letters, I will try that.

@Elcee thank you for the kind words and great tips. I definitely needed to set my letters up first I realized too late that they weren't as centre as they should be. Ay tips on how to fix that after the fact because removing them would have left a little indent and stain from the fondant. Thanks again!

Thank you delicious dessert for your comment (I don't know if I should reply here or the photo?). Thankyou for the tip on the extra butter cream around the border! Definitely will come in handy. It was my first time stacking a cake by myself and I had cut the dowels for the top tier too long because I misjudged it and I didn't have time to fix it. So I tried to make my pearls a little larger to compensate but it was hard to make them not look wonky (at least in my skill set lol, I'm sure others can do it).

Thank you elcee. I love pearl borders, I think the one on the cake was a bit large for my tastes lol. This is addictive.

I am definitely feeling the love in your cakes! They make me smile. My suggestion would be to try out a variety of frosting tips to see which give you the affect that you are going for. For straight lines you can make a line in the frosting with a tooth pick before you pipe to help give it a straighter appearance. And I like to chill my cakes before I decorate them to give myself a hard surface that is easier to work on. (Sorry I can't figure out how to comment on a photo from my phone). Keep it up!
