A close friend did smash cakes every year for her daughters until they were about 13 or so. They were sheet cakes and they'd smash it in the face of the birthday person in the backyard (not hard), so i guess I never even thought about there being an issue that the cake was for a two year old.

They only ordered the smash cake. I did do the first birthday cake which was close to the same price, but not a sculpted cake. it was a knock off of one of Anne Heap's designs with a circus lion on top. I think for the second birthday they just had a family dinner.

I do something similar - a 2 layer three inch buttercream with a big one for $15
