AWays to do Charlie Brown's shirt, uh, I mean Chevron, on buttercream:

Stencil it on with buttercream Airbrush it on using a stencil Paint it on with a paintbrush and a stencil Apply it to the cake after cutting it out of fondant or chocolate clay Frozen buttercream transfer Combination of FBT and chocolate clay Wait until the trend passes and you don't have to deal with it anymore

I had a friend who I'm doing a wedding cake for her in September... we had a very nice simple three tier white cake with coloured ribbon and flowers on top.. my kind of stress free cake! That was decided when we decided the engagement cake. Then she decides that she wants a mad hatter shaped cake... which I have never done... I try to steer her into a different direction and she finally chooses a more simple cake with the tiers being tapered instead of completely wonky... then she says she wants flowers on top... Usually I steer customers towards getting their florist to do a topper in the same flowers as the bouquets etc. However, her groom wants edible flowers... then she says to me:
"how r u going with flower making? i have another friend who can help out with them if u need?"
to which I explained that I was ok, if she wanted roses, thats great, if she want's anything else she needs to let me know what she wants anything else she needs to let me know so I can practice them. Then she said:
"
yeah, thats what i though but she has just finished some course making them & offered to do it at cost price to get her name out there for more customers..i told her u r already making my cake but will see how u feel about it..."
I told her I'm sorry but I'm not comfortable putting someone elses on top of one of my cakes. I thought I don't know who this person is, what class she did or what her flowers are like.

Was she planning on handing out her business card at the reception or something? Some people...

AThis thread is awesome! It will take me forever to read all of it, but it will be entertaining! So here are my " things not to ask": -Oh, my 7-year-old would love to be able to decorate cakes like that! Would you teach her? -How long did that take? (I have learned from my mom whose artistry is with paint and brush that the answer to this is "All my life!".)

AI had someone call wanting a wedding cake for 100 servings but she wanted a 7 tiered cake and said her budget was 1000.00. Gave her a price of 1100.00 fora simple design. She says oh well I have someone who can do it for 200.00!!!!! The. Why did you call me? Just wanted to see if you can come u see. I told her that is really cheap. I hope it turns out well.

Had one of my daughter's acquaintances wanting a cake to seve 250 her budget was 150. I saw the cake she ended it up. Disaster!! Fondant drooping. Ribbon crooked and the person out it on aluminum foil!

The person who paid $150 for enough cake to feed 250 people deserved a cake wreck.  If you can't afford to feed cake to that many people, why are you hosting a party??  People just need to get real.

AI was setting up a cupcake wedding today, and it was very simple, just with flavored buttercreams on top, no filling. It was pretty, but nothing special, and I get all these people coming up saying I should be on cupcake wars, lmao! I just told them that there was no way I could make a cupcake from dill pickle and salami or whatever else crazy ingredients they pull out of their hats, taste good. And there is no fricken way I want to work that hard for no pay.

AI always hated hearing that from customers at the lame 'bakery' I worked at a couple years ago. We'd have like 10 cupcakes in the case that was too cold so the cupcakes were hard, the 'buttercream' was straight shortening with no flavor whatsoever (except when I would be granted permission to make something that tasted good), and customers would ask us when we were going to be on cupcake wars! I live in a smaller town (15,000 within city limits), and there isn't a lot of culture here. The only bakery is in one of our two grocery stores. I guess any cupcake not white or chocolate is pretty exciting.

Really odd thing about this was that I never had any contact with the bride at all.
I've never worked like this before. The owner (wife) sent a photo and a list of details (flavors, colors, flowers etc)
It's very strange to me but I assume any future weddings there will be handled the same way,
Through the owner. I don't think I want to do business there in the future. It doesn't seem
Worth it to me at all.

They probably set it up as a package deal and marked up the price of the cake...or even let the bride assume they make the cakes themselves....I agree with earlier poster. A-holes

AThis one happened years ago, but it still rankles me every time I think of it. My brother and his wife-to-be asked me to do their wedding cake. "Nothing complicated," (Warning bells!) "Just eight dozen cupcakes with a buttercream rose on each one and an eight inch cake to match for us to cut." Okay, I can do that. It was my intention to make this my wedding gift for the happy couple, but before I could tell them this my future SIL hands me a twenty dollar bill and says "This is to cover your costs."
