Guidance needed for Pregnant belly cake with footprint!

Hello my fellow cakers!

I have been asked to do a baby shower cake in the shape of a pregnant belly and chest with the tiny footprint in the belly. I think I can figure most of it out but wanted to see what you all do for this. She only wants it to feed 15 - 20 people. How do you make the tiny footprint?

I would purchase a really small footprint cookie cutter if you can find it and cut out a thicker layer of fondant and lay that underneath the fondant you are using to drape the belly with.

If you can't find a cookie cutter your best bet is to google images of baby footprints and print out a copy (sizing it of course) and then use that as a cutting guide.

I just did a cake like this a couple of weeks ago. It was very easy. For this type of cake,you will have to do the belly in fondant. You won't be able to see the footprint with buttercream. For the footprint, I simply molded a small footprint out of gum paste and let it dry overnight. The next day I positioned the footprint where I wanted it, glued it down with a dab of buttercream, draped my fondant, smoothed as needed then took a small fondant tool and gently pressed into the fondant on the foot to make the indentations between the toes. My cake served about 75 and I used the soccer ball pan and the two baseball pans for the tummy and boobs. I placed these on top of a sheet cake. You could use the baseball pan for the belly and cupcakes for boobs on top of a 1/4 sheet cake to make your servings.The mother to be loves owls so I also molded a small owl and chain to hang around the neck. I did a similar cake for about 20 people and used a three-high 10" cake which I carved for the belly and used some large round mugs for the boobs, but using the ball and cupcakes on a sheet would work well too. For the footprint it was really easy to mold a little foot and put it on the crumbcoat before covering with fondant. I wanted the footprint to be a bit more subtle so I didn't go over it with the fondant tool, but it just depends on what you're going for.

I have a tutorial on my blog on how I do the belly cake. It is minus the footprint. When someone requests the footprint I have a mold that I use to make one out of fondant and I lay it on the belly before covering in fondant.
When I need more servings I make an additional " belly " just the soccer ball pan, and cover it with matching fondant for my client to use as a kitchen cake.

I did one just a couple weeks ago and it was a huge hit! I used the Wilton ball pan for the breasts and a pyrex bowl for the belly and it turned out great! For the foot I molded the flat part out of fondant and then did the toes seperatly and attached them with piping gel and allowed it to dry. I then dirty iced my cake placed a fondant belly button in the middle and the footprint in the desired spot then covered the whole cake in fondant and made sure to form the fondant around the foot area. It is a lot easier than it may sound and I know you will do a great job! icon_biggrin.gif[img][/img]

It is so very easy and I'm sure yours will turn out great also. I forgot to add that my cake was for a young "sexy mama" baby shower. I also placed a little round belly button on the tummy with a bellybutton ring in it and the mommy was wearing a pink and brown lacy negligee. I heard they adored it. Good luck!

Thank you all for the suggestions. Melanie, I did check your blog and it was certainly helpful. My only issue at this point is that I do not have the ball pans and do not want to purchase them for only 1 cake. Unfortunately I will be carving stacked rounds like Alicia :-/ Guess who will be making cake pops!!!! I'm off to get started and hopefully I can upload a photo once it is complete.

I am glad you posted your pic.  I also need to make on and don't want to purchase the pans, but I did go and look at them, and the pans seemed really small. My client din't request an additional cake underneath the belly, she just wanted the belly and ta ta's on a cake board. If I made a belly out of just the ball pan I am afraid it would be really small.

 

Do you have any suggestions on carving since this is the way you did yours?
