You can charge per serving or per cake... doesn't matter, all the per serving price is is the price for the whole cake divided by the number of servings it feeds, so the cake should cost the same no matter how you price it.

But again, most of my weddings are in the 300+ serving range, so I almost always have kitchen cakes.
many in my area still do the single layer sheet cakes, so I'm a little more set apart with the double layer kitchen cakes.

Haven't heard this term before...what is a kitchen cake?
i have a post that explained it in another recent thread about kitchen cakes.

I would rather make 1 cake for $150, than 3 for $50 each.
The person who works for nothing will always have plenty to do!

$1.85 a serving, filled. And it is not "sloppy" but it's nothing special, and FAST! With a border, 2 layer, round, not square.
If you don't mind my asking, what is your per serving charge for your decorated wedding cake.
Sure, no problem. My buttercream cakes start at $2.50 a serving, I will do ribbon, dots, a few icing roses, borders, some scrolls, buttercream swags, place silk flowers, and a monogram before prices go up. I add on if the design covers the whole cake, such as cornelli lace or stripes, or if there is more than a dozen or so dragees, cause they are just so slippery!
I add on for most any fondant accents, unless it is very simple and it is a small amount and I already have fondant. And I do the same with my fondant prices. I start at $3.50, and I'll do a lot, maybe a couple hours or so of work for no additional cost, but if it is something that is very time consuming, then I add on.
But, if I know them really well, and they are really sweet people, and I know they are really limited in funds, then I give them about 10-15% off, if I think it may mean that they will go to Walmart if they can't afford the "regular prices."
I would rather make 1 cake for $150, than 3 for $50 each.

Thanks Annabakescakes, that kinda helps give me a better idea as to how I should have my prices fall in line between the decorated cake and the kitchen cake. I appreciate the help!
I should add that I am not legal, but this works! People like it and I make money, and don't feel bad doing it for them. (BTW, working on the legal part, it takes time in my state!)

Thanks again and good luck on the getting legal part. I am a licensed home baker in my state and I feel good about that, so I know you will too when you get thru all that.
