Need tips on making fondant numbers!!

Could someone one share tips on the best way to make fondant numbers?

I'm making a number 30 to go on top of a 3 tier birthday cake but not sure how or what to attach to it so that it would stand up on top of the cake. Thanks Christe

You can use wire, toothpicks, plastic lollipop sticks, or bamboo skewers. Just form the number and insert whatever you're using for the support. Let it dry totally...add some tylose or gum-tex to your fondant if you can, to help it dry quicker.

If you use wire, it can't go directly into the cake, but everything else I listed can. My personal preference is plastic lollipop sticks because they're really easy to trim to a different height if needed, longer than toothpicks, and easier to cut than a bamboo skewer.

I make long ropes and then curl the ends in to make the numbers look decorative. Make the fondant numbers a few days in advance so that they dry.......or at least overnight. After you have made the number, insert a regular toothpick in the bottom....use this to hold the number upright. Add a dot of royal icing underneath the number to "glue" it on top. Good luck.

I used the wire also and inserted the wire in coffee straws and inserted into cake, I did the number 16 you can check out my photo it is the candy barrel cake, I made a rope with fondant, cut to size and made the ends curl and took a toothpix to make line design on the numbers and inserted one wire into the 1 and inserted two wires into the 6, let dry and inserted into coffee straws and then into iced cake. HTH

Thanks everyone I was pretty much thinking the same thing but just was not sure it would hold up.

Hi, can you use straight sugarpaste or do you need to add Tylose Powder or alternative to change consistency. Im doing numbers to just lay flat on cupcakes for one batch but on another I'll be wanting to make a topper with wire so don't know if straight fondant best for that or not? thanks

It would be better to add Tylose powder to fondant, if the numbers are to be positioned upright on cake topper.Tylose adds strength to paste - reduces the risk of breakages. Hope this helps!
