Marvel, how about making the top tier an actual skull cake on your 3 tier cake? You could make it out of cake or RKT. Or if you're feeling adventurous, middle tier is a skull, top tier is a top hat (also cake) for the skull. Not sure about the bottom though...

Edited - I've cut the cake at the bottom now. It looks like 3" diameter at the bottom is pretty stable (I hope).

Hi everyone

Just popping by for a bit of a distraction really.  Got to psych myself up to do bits for my friend's birthday cake next weekend but it's hard.  So I have gone in to work instead.  For those on here who knew - I lost my mum on Sunday, God bless her.  Today is her birthday - and I never got to make the violas for the cake I was going to do.  Don't ever think I will actually use them now as it will always remind me of her.  Life goes on but it is hard.  I will chip in on here occasionally.

Tiddy - I thought that blue and white cake was simply stunning.

Barbara - I loved the beach cake - somebody has asked me for a beach cake in a few weeks's time - I might steal the towel idea.

Take care everyone and sorry if I missed anybody - there were just so many pages to catch up on!

Kathy

AKathy, I really feel for you. I lost my dad 3 weeks after his 85th birthday and it is fast approaching the 3rd anniversary of his passing. It still hurts even though we didn't have a happy life with him. But end of the day it is your parent and you feel a "gut-wrenching" loss. Hang on in there, scream and cry when you need to and shout when you need a shoulder. Remember this thread is not just about cake.

Our love and thoughts are with you.

Xx

AIkwym Kuushi! The lady who emailed me a couple of days ago was the same lady who said to me at the fair that it was difficult to justify spending so much on something that will just be eaten. I was very good and restrained myself from asking if she had that view about her wedding breakfast, or why she was bothering to look at cakes at all if she thought it was pointless.

She actually wasn't being picky though, it was just her genuine feelings.

She did say she loved watching cake boss though, and weren't his cakes amazing. I said they should be seeing as the custom ones start at $1000 and the off-the-shelf range at $200. I also mentioned that they have a whole team working at one time on one cake and it still takes them a day for a good wedding cake. As we were just chatting I managed to do it without sounding like I was lecturing (I checked with hubby after as he always tells me if I need to rein it in!)

I'll use the flowers example next time I think, that's a good one!

ALizzy literally just been on the phone to a lady who can't justify spending £95 on a two tier christening cake with edible booties and flowers when it doesn't last and just goes stale. So I asked her how much she is spending in her reception buffet and she told me £300 for 100 people. So I asked how she can justify that and she went silent. I went on to say that technically that food is only cooked and a bespoke cake design takes hours of planning, skill and artistry. She hung the phone up on me after saying she will be I touch if she changes her mind.

Safe to say I won't be having her back as a customer.

AIs like they have to have the cake as a status symbol, but think you should provide it for cost (or less in some cases!). I really can't grasp why people are unable to see that a cake does not magically appear fully decorated. Have these people literally never cooked so have no idea how long things take?

And to give you the reason that 'it will just get stale'! How hard is it to not reply 'well order something smaller you idiot'? Everything's a bloody competition with people now.

The one that annoys me possibly even more than the 'it's just going to get eaten' brigade are the ones who ask for dummies to keep the cost down. Ffs, yes, it will keep the cost down if I don't decorate the sodding thing, otherwise it's just as much work!

See what you've done now Kuushi, that's me set off for the day :-D

AAnd (really on a roll now :-D) £95 for two tiers is a bargain and she's a twonk for not snapping your arm off with that offer! £3 a head for food, 95p a head for a beautifully decorated bit of edible art. You can bet people would prefer your cake to whatever food she's managed to get at that price!

I'm done now for a minute... ;-)

AI know! Best off all is if you went in to a bakery and asked for a slice of cake they'd charge you more than that!

AHaha I'm loving the ranting! And I don't even sell my cakes...But even I have felt guilty charging people for ingredients sometimes when I see the look on their faces. And I feel the need to point out 'that would cost you X if you bought it from a professional'. I'm sure they think I make the prices up!

On the one hand I can see where some people come from. Before I started decorating cakes I had no idea of the time or effort that goes into them. It's just that people don't seem to question the price of certain items at a wedding, like the ridiculous fees for hiring a venue, but they feel it's ok to question the price of a cake. I think it's just a shame that people don't have the manners nor the pride to not admit that it's too expensive for them. I'm sure bakers wouldn't mind if someone said my budget is only X amount maybe we could make a smaller cake or something rather than trying to get the biggest best cake into their budget! Cake boss and other such programs have done cakes no favours!

AI got some great advice here on making my son's christening cake and I didn't come back as lost the link! I felt guilty as you were all so friendly.

I've re-found you now so wanted to post my cake. It's nowhere near as good as all yours as I guess I'm a beginner and not at all professional. It has a lot wrong but I am pleased with the outcome and we didn't even bring any cake home as people were going up for seconds and thirds! Ha ha!

AKuushi I can't believe that! My cake cost me £35 to make myself and that's smaller, very plain and made by a beginner. Couldn't she just say my budget is £50, what can you do?

Lovely cake by the way and yep like tiddy said practise and you'll be making golf bags like her in a month or two! Haha she's crazy :p

Haha Kuuushi Lmao at the chicken sandwich, did you sort your rolling pin out with the ebay seller?

Hi Bianx welcome back, I agree with the others your cake looks good for your first cake you've done really well, it's cute. I wouldn't have had the confidence to make a cake that would be used for an occasion when I just started which was only about two years ago now so give yourself a pat on the back. well done.

ABianx nice to see you again, that's a lovely cake, I love your blocks, they're really square.

Loving the ranting and agreeing with it too., was it sugarluva who said people don't know what really goes into a cake? (There was a lot to catch up on!) I had no idea before I started decorating either, even now I'm still surprised when I add everything up.

"Twonk" I love it! That's gona be my word of the week! :-D

I think the tooth needs to come out Roxy, still giving me grief. :-(
