Jo I have the silicone mat from ikea,I use that to roll out my fondant I just wet underneath it with a bit of wet kitchen roll so it doesn't move.
AYes Jean, I got the Ophelia, probably wasnt the easiest starter mat to get, 2nd one cooling as didn't do the first one long enough, think I paid around £16.
I was wondering about the spreader to, have seen videos where they use what look like side scrapers to do it.
AQuick question, aircraft cakes, are they always made up of little square that have to be stuck on individually?

AHere's the final piece for my assessment

Wow Siany that's fantastic so detailed, you've even put the eye glass on Absolom. I like that it's all little cakes to make one big story. You must be so pleased with it well done you
Nanny love the lace, it does look a very detailed mat. How was the whole process off making the lace? Still waiting for mine to come, why does everything take longer when you can't wait to get it?
wow Siany thats detailed! I'm not really familiar with Alice in Wonderland but some of that stuff is 'spacey'!
Nanny- you did it! you made cake lace! Do you mean it's fiddly to get it off the mat?
Siany- wooooooowwwww brilliant work! Did you write the words 'I'm late' by hand on the sides of the clocks??? Well done!
ASiany you should be proud of yourself - fantastic work!! Minecraft is based on little squares Nanny from what I can see but I've Google ' d as very simple minecraft cake for myself this week !!
Hopefully one day I'll get a 'grown up' order like cake lace ha ha !! It looks pretty Nanny.
Roxylee do you still use powdered sugar when rolling out when using your mat, the clip I've seen the fondant sticks to the mat then you put on cake and then peel off the mat...

Heheh I did wonder about aircraft cakes.
I think it depends on how detailed you want the cake to be Barbara. You could cover the whole cake in tons of little squares, or perhaps cover the whole cake in SP in one colour, then cut squares of colours that are different to the one you covered the cake with, and cover the cake that way. The second way won't look very flat though.
ARoxylee and Jean, yes very fiddly, but I'm sure that because if that particular mat, there easier ones out there I think, if you look there are tiny long bits all over the lace, they tear abit.
Siany, that amazing must say, well done you.
Yes Jo I still use icing sugar and lift the fondant onto my cake with my rolling pin. I find the fondant sticks to much so I can't turn it round as I'm rolling. I should imagine they are all different though and it probably depends what SP you use.
AWow Siany that's really brilliant!! So much detail, well done you, it's amazing
Nanny that does look like a more delicate mat, but I'm sure with practise you will get the hang of it :) if it's still slightly tacky when you take it out of the oven, you can leave it to air dry if that helps release it? Very pretty though :)
Night Petitecat.
Nanny I can see the little long bits they are very small and delicate, it amazes me still that it is made out of icing and is so fine and detailed. Maybe leaving it in the mat a little long might help it come out without it breaking as much.

Night all
AWhoo hoo everyone , how sad am I up still up at this ungodly making cake lace, I really do need a life dont I? But on a good note, 2nd attempt and by God I've cracked I believe, I put it in for 15mins then turned the oven off and left it in there to dry for another 15mins, took it out and it peeled off so much easier, I used 42 grms, to 50ml of water, then half tsp of the other liquid that comes with it, I made 2 strips and still enough for another one, any leftovers to keep in the fridge.
Only downside to this is I want more mats.
That's great Nanny. I only have the little mats off ebay they are a lot smaller than yours but cheap around £2- £3.
You could have a look at those they have some nice designs and a round doily style one.

No it's not hand written, they are the chocolate transfer sheets I got made.
Thanks for the lovely comments. It's been a lot Of work and I'm glad I'm handed in. Just got to get the paperwork done now. Got 10 days till my next cake is up so having a couple of days off.
I didn't know you could get chocolate transfer sheets made, I learn something new everyday on this thread.
ARighty oh then :) I cannot for the life of me remember who said what as I've missed so much! That'll teach me! Anyway here goes.... Siany it all came together brilliantly and looks fantastic! I so hope someone orders an Alice cake soon :D The ganache was brilliant and I can see me becoming a convert especially as it doesn't look like its snowed in the cake room lol. The sp also went on much nicer and love the fact it stayed where it was put! The bag was one of those spontaneous creative moments and is half done but I really must get on with the Minecraft cakes tomorrow! And on that subject (can't remember who asked)I put a thin layer of sp then cover in squares :D really easy with a strip cutter bur does make me bossed eyed after a few rows haha! On the subject of the mat...i for one about 2 years ago and hated it but having recently used it for the camo call of duty cake I love it again. Whack it in between the layers roll turn roll turn...top mat off then just lift the bottom one up and over the cake. It then comes off the mat easily :) Mmmm what else did I miss....oh yes the cake lace! Fab! Want some right now :D culpitt just sent me a price list and may just have to try it :S Think that's everything apart from the coy carp! And I won't go there haha! Will post a pic of bag soon x
