Roxy I would also suggest using american buttercream esp the crusting kind rather than SMBC or IMBC, which make a mess with the icing smearing onto the tissue!

AGah! Sorry will have a proper look through rest of thread later, but am having the darndest time arranging the flowers for this wedding cake at the moment :/ She wanted ranunculus, daisies & sweetpeas for a side arrangement and I can't for the life of me get them to look right at the moment...ggrrrr! It's not a flower combo I would have advised but they were adamant so......

Any words of advice?! I was trying to get them in one arrangement and use a pick, but I'm wondering if I should separate them into a couple of bunches placed next to each other instead?

Mel sorry I haven't done a bunch of flowers yet on the side of a cake. I do hope you find a way to arrange it though! I can't wait to see the picture!

Mel I think ranunculus is quite big compared with the others - I haven't done one of those but I think I would treat it like a big rose and do them separately.  It doesn't matter as long as their wires are concealed.

Thanks for the advice on stencils - I had another look at mine and there's loads in the envelope - some small ones too.  Although I plan to do royal icing, I am sure I have seen somebody use them like you do with wall stencils from the diy store.  I may have dreamed it but I am convinced I saw somebody dab Trex through the stencil and then colour (dab) it with a brush dipped in tint.  Do you think I can find it again.......no I can't.  So I think I dreamed it!  Got some lovely new silicon moulds today - topiary bushes, wellie boots and a large wine bottle and glass!  I would be playing but I have to pack my suitcase soon - so it'll have to wait.  Has anybody done the bottle one?  I plan to use leaf glaze to make it shiny - not sure if there is something better out there......???

ASo today I got to the interview after driving most of the way to Cardiff airport before realising that i had missed a turning and needed to turn back, and then I drove passed head office so again had to turn back... But thankfully I left loads of time so with all the getting lost I was still early!

It went really well and I am now employed as a part time deputy manager for Ty Hafan. No driving, no crazy hours, I can keep doing my church activities and I will be able to keep the business. There is an answer to prayer if ever I had one!

Anyone used goldleaf/silverleaf on SP? I have circles to cover and wonder if its a nightmare? Shame I cant do it now but will be stuck on the cake barrel.

The base of my cake is only 2" and want to do scallops (in art deco style) sort of 2/3 high any ideas?  Cant locate a scallop shape anyway. It needs to be a sharp cutter.

I have seen those expensive moulds by marvellous moulds that are perfect but at nearly £30 not going to get used again. The scallops are this style  I suppose you could cut circles then cut out the sides?  Be time consuming and hit n miss.  I like these dragrees too - how do you get them to stick and stay assuming you have to use tweezers?

yeah I see your point! But they should be quite easy with a circular cutter...just make a little paper template to get each the same :D

Yeh, agree, will start having ago.  Did a quick search on the dragrees and you just glue or RI them on. I'm not sure yet if I'll go that far depends on time. Kids are off school on Thursday for election day (joke when most use postal) and break up on Friday. Because this layer is false I can do more in advance and really should be the hardest.  Need to think about making this wild magnolia next!

ANatt, that's wonderful! I'm so glad it's worked out for you :)

Chasing, I'd like to know about the gold/silverleaf too. That is a beautiful cake!!! I've mentioned making cutters out of aluminum cans. Perhaps give it a go? What you need is a template of the scallop and shape the aluminum with pliers. There's youtube videos about it. The dragees look like even more of a nightmare- I wonder if you could apply them to the scallop before you apply the scallop to the cake. So put glue where you want the dragees to be and drop a small handful of dragees and just tidy them up. Wait for the glue to set then place on cake. HTH

Haha, no it isn't! That's my mother, she's 35 years older than me and about 8 inches shorter! I'd be interested to know if I do look how people think I do though!

Thank you all for your well wishes and congratulations!! I'm so happy to have actually gotten something with a secure monthly income! This morning on my way I was really disheartened with the idea that I might be making another trip to Cardiff for it to not turn into anything, however it turned out to be the complete opposite! I start Tuesday, 2 weeks training in Porthcawl and then on to work in Swansea.

Chasing - I have used leaf, but I found it very awkward... I had the crumpled stuff in a pot though, I think if I did it again I would use the flat sheets maybe....
