My favorite books right now are Kerry Vincent's "Romantic Wedding Cakes" and Lindy Smith's "Celebrate with a Cake." I also like Sylvia Weinstock's "Sweet Celebrations," Collette Peters "Cakes to Dream On," and Scott Clark Woolley's ''Cakes by Design." "Cakes by Design" doesn't actually give instructions for cakes. It has a few recipes, but is mainly about flowers. All of these books make everything seem way easier than it really is, but you can get great ideas and they do TRY to give clear instructions, I think. Maybe I'm just a slow learner.....LOL
Hope this helps at least a little. Thanks for letting me indulge the part of me that used to be a librarian.
anyone seen this book? Comments?

I would suggest " The Well Decorated Cake" by Toba Garrett, it is an excellent book.
As well as any book of Colette Peters would be good to have in your library.
The Cake Mix Doctor is a excellent recipe book.
I have a lot of wiltons, but I really like debbie brown's books and though it is not cake related any sculpey molding books you can make them out of fondent as well..

My favourite book is by Lindy Smith called Celebrate With a Cake. the instructions are excellent and there are step-by-step photographs included. It's a good book for a beginner because everything is explained very well and there isn't any prevoius experience required. I especially love the section on creating a sugarpaste bride and groom.
I'd like to buy The Whimsical Bakehouse but I'm still deciding whether I need it.
I also just bought a book by Maisie Parrish called Sugardough Magic. When it arrives in the mail, I'll let you know if it's good.
I have Colette Peters "Cakes to Dream on" and Debbie Browns "Fairytale Cakes". Both of these were very difficult to understand. I am only a beginner. There was a lack of clear instructions and they didn't include step-by-step photos......they had line drawings instead. But if you're not a beginner I'm sure you will love these.
..hard to decide which are my favs but I love Colette Peters books and all volumes of Sugarcraft are excellent. Toba Garretts book "The Well Decorated Cake" is also one of myy favs!!
I have two favorites- The Cake Bible by Rose Levy Berubaum and Cakes by Design by Scott Clark Woolley.

I have this book It is new the lady at Walden Books said it is put out by their Borders company. I really like the book. Lots of info and recipes.
Whoops, I don't know how I forgot "The Cake Bible" on my list above. I use it to figure out how much batter needs to go into my pans and it does a good job explaining why and how different ingredients and methods affect a cake. I really like the basic yellow cake recipe. The basic chocolate cake is somewhat dry. I use the Classic Chocolate Egg-White Buttercream consistently and I like her Mousseline Buttercream also.
I also just purchased and received Toba Garrett's T'he Well Decorated Cake." I've only had time to glance at it, so I don't know if it will become a favorite or not, but it goes into great detail about many things which I'm sure will prove useful.
I love the cake bible
I got it from the library but it is on my shopping list
I've made the almond cake......Delicious!!
Also the genoises are really good
I just wished they had alot more pictures.
Julia child's book is great if you love baking everything....from scratch.

My faves...
The Cake Bible ... Rose Levy Berenbaum ... great source for recipes and for explaining the basic chemistry behind each one so you can make substitutions and changes without changing the texture, etc (unless you want to) If you ever bake fro scratch, this is one you should have.
The Wedding Cake Book... Dede Wilson ... great recipes (I use her IMBC all the time), gorgeous pictures of cakes and she uses almost no artificial colours or over the top decorations ... simple and elegant. This book also has an invaluable little guide at the front which tells you the # of cups of batter you need to fill various round cakes pans. I use it all the time when I'm scaling a recipe for different pans.
The Well Decorated Cake .... Toba Barette... a wonderful all around book. Some nice recipes, explanations of many basic (and some not so basic)techniques.
Collette's Wedding Cakes ... Collette Peters ... most of these cakes are WAY over the top, but as a design source, and inspiration it's great. I'd love to get some of her other books too.
Simplifying Sugar Flowers ... I forget the author... nice range of gumpaste flowers and comparatively simple. She also uses a fairly small range of cutters to achieve a bunch of different flowers whihc is nice.
Anything by Debbie Brown ... really cute cakes that are not too fussy, and always a lot of fun!
The Ultimate book of Children's Party Cakes ... a couple of authors on this one ... this was my first REAL cake book (my first cake book was a little booklet put out by one of the cocnut manufacturers and showed a bunch of cut-out cakes ... )
Oh, the list goes on (I'm a big fan of books so I have a ton) but that's all that come to mind right now!
