The quickest and easiest way is to get one of the Wilton pans for the 3D tree...its so easy and fun to just take a large star tip and decorate it all over and then add candies and stuff....
Otherwise I guess I'd just bake rounds in graduating sizes (10/8/6/4 or even 10/9/8/7/6/5/4...in pans or cut from sheet cakes) and stack them up that way, then decorate.

sugarshack has a great one that was done by janell. it hink the tutorial was lost back in 2008. if anyones has it please post?
just an FYI... I wound up stacking several rounds and an upside down cupcake, then shaved off the edges to get the tree shape...the photo is in my gallery if you would like to take a look. <Ill try posting here but, have never had much luck of it working!>
