you got a piture of what you mean? id make a stump out of whatever - fake or cake.
then graduate the rounds for the tree, biggest at the bottom obviously. then carve into a cone shape. up to you if you want to carve in more of a tree shape, layers and branches sort of thing.
crumbcoat and fondant - id be tempted to just make the branches/ layers in fondant.
xx

I did a cake that had a 3d tree on top made of fondant. Looks cool though and it might save you time because you make the pieces of the tree ahead of time. Also, you could do a 3D cookie tree atop a cake. I got my cake out of a wilton yearbook just not sure which one but you might find it on their website. If you look at my pics you will find the tree cake. It was a big hit.

I've made one...not sure if it's what you had in mind or not.... I just stacked 3 x 8" rounds and 2 x 6" rounds and then carved them into a cone/tree shape. Use support every 4 inches or so but I used smaller boards than the actual cake size so that I didn't have to deal with them when I was carving. Crumb coat and then I made the branches out of buttercream using a large star tip. Just started at the bottom and worked my way up. HTH. icon_smile.gif

If you can find one of these to rent or purchase, you'll be set:

I found mine at a thrift store. I've used it and it baked up great. I did fill the core with batter even though the instructions didn't say to do that.

icon_lol.gif The link I just posted is to your cake. Wonderful job, and I'm glad you gave your directions for it.
