Help! I've seen these on several cakes but am not sure how to make them. I've tried to search on here and must be having a "stupid" moment because I can't find anything.

I love this site! Everyone is so talented and helpful!

Do you mean like characters and images or like wrapping the chocolate around the cake? If you mean like images, I have made many of them. Here is a few threads and links to help you out. I would be happy to answer any other questions after you have read through the explanation.

I think there is another good one started by squirrellycakes called chocolate transfers for newbies or something like that. Also check out the whimsical bakehouse book.

They are so easy. Take any picture you like. If it has writting reverse it.
This is like paint by number with chocolate.
Cover your picture with parchment and tape them down so that they do not move. Then just trace an outline with a dark colour. The fill in the balance with various colours by pipping them in. You can also buy bottles to melt the candy melts in if you prefer but I don't like having that much chocolate hanging around all the time.
Do your painting as if you are looking from behind. So you would need the eye colours, the highlights and the various other levels until you reach the background. You are in essence painting from front to back so the reverse of normal.
Let if harden. Then peal off the parchment and voila! a beautiful painting. You put the rough side down against the icing and then the great side out.
You are only limited by your imagination.
Have fun. I love these and they are great looking.

So are candy melts made of chocolate? Is that why it's called a chocolate transfer? How do you melt them? Just in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove?

You can melt in the microwave for a few seconds or in a double boiler on the stove.
