I am making cupcakes for a friend this weekend for her gender reveal party. I was going to just fill each cupcake with pink/blue BC but I would really like to color the batter insided the cupcake instead. She wants chocolate cupcakes but I'm afraid if I fill the liners half way with chocolate batter, pipe a small amount of pink/blue batter & then cover with more chocolate batter, you won't be able to see the pink/blue batter because the chocolate batter is so dark. Please let me know if someone has tried this before. Thanks!
Do they all have to dark chocolate? Could you do a white chocolate and then pipe your colored batter in? Or maybe core the baked cupcake and fill with colored filling? Just random thoughts... good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Sometimes you are your own best answer, I say do a test and see if it comes out the way you want.
AYou can do the zebra striped method. Put a little of one color batter in, then put a little of the next color right on top of the first, in the center. Continue doing this until you have it filled to the correct amount. It's a lot of work for cupcakes, so if you have to make many, it might not be a god idea. (putting the batter in large squeeze bottles will make the process much faster.)
AAmy Atlas blog has a tutorial for the cupcakes. http://blog.amyatlas.com/2011/10/21/halloweekend-countdown-orange-black-cupcakes/
If you want to get fancy, you could do a leopard print. Just make your base be the chocolate so they are still chocolate cupcakes, and do a light pink and hot pink (or blues depending on gender) for the spots, or white and pink/blue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JxKzgPm4pY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Thank you everyone for your responses.
Thank you SecretAgentCakeBaker for the tutorial! This is very helpful!
Exciting!! I'm doing a gender reveal cake this weekend too and so badly wanted to do chocolate but switched to vanilla because I couldn't figure out how to make it work otherwise. You've got a creative idea, would love to see how it turned out! Please post pics after :)

I am very excited! I have never made a cake or cupcakes for a gender reveal party. I have colored vanilla batter for a purple ombre cake but that's about it. I will post pics for sure! :)
When I do them, I just bake a thin white cake coloured blue or pink, cut it into small circle, pop it in the freezer until it's cold but not frozen.
Then put about a tablespoon of chocolate batter in the bottom of your liner, pop in a cold circle of coloured cake, and cover it up with the rest.
They bake up perfectly, and the middles don't dry out.
This is a terrible photo, lol, taken on a mobile.
AWell for my gender reveal party, my friend did the chocolate cupcakes and filled them with a cheesecake filling that she tinted pink(little did i know at the time) but she did a swirl effect with the frosting. She made a wonnderful cream cheese frosting some tinted blue and pink then twirled it on top....beautiful and delicious
They are adorable! I can't get over how cute they are! And totally would have matched my yellow reveal cake (also a girl, hehe). We should have combined parties :)
