How Do I Create This Cupcake Swirl From Cupcake Royale?

My daughter wants cupcakes for her wedding in July with a swirl like these cupcakes from Cupcake Royale in Seattle. We are too far away from Seattle to actually order them.
Does anyone have any ideas? I was wondering if it is piped on using a large round tip and then touched up with a spatula.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Yeah, I'd say piped with a fat round tip and then stroked with either the back of a teaspoon or an off-set palette knife?
Try to see in you tube, type magnolia's bakery coz they have some video how they iced they cupcake using a spatula only.
Do you think the spatula is used to create the rounded smooth portion of the swirl or the carved portion under the swirl?
Thank you for the tip on searching YouTube for Magnolia Bakery. The video was very close, but led me to a video actually posted from Cupcake Royale on their opening day.
Here is the link if anyone else is interested:

I live in Seattle and have asked them to show me how they do it. they will tell me they do it with a spatula but will not show me how.
I looked piped on because the edges are smooth and then a spatula was used to make the detail.
Maybe they pipe on a big blob and then push it out with the small spatula and then make the ridges.
That video is great, now I want to go make cupcakes just to try it out.
I think we've tried most of their flavors and they make a pretty yummy cupcake.

That's a good video! Thanks for sharing!
That's a great video.
Their swirls beat that sloppy Magnolia swirl by a mile!
Those of you who have eaten their cuppies, what kind of icing do they use? I tried that swirl on my cuppies the other day, and although I got the technique down pat (it wasn't that hard, really), my icing wasn't smooth like that.
Tried this today, not real successful! I think my icing was too soft. I'll have to try again another day.
I think they use an American Buttercream. Maybe a combination butter and shortening.
Ugh.
I tried this swirl technique over the weekend and got decent results. The "carve" in the swirl didn't stay defined however. It seemed as though the frosting may have been too soft so I added additional sugar to stiffen it but that didn't seem to help.
The frosting was smooth though and had a nice look to it. My daughter was satisfied with the results and it looked special.
Thanks so much for this wonderful link. I 've been looking for this for a long time now. Can't wait to try!
