I need a recipe for making rock candy (not the type that are like sugar crystals, but the type that actually looks like rocks). Any ideas????

2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
¾ cup water
1tsp. (or so) flavoring
food coloring (if desired)

In a 2-quart saucepan, mix together sugar, corn syrup and water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Insert candy thermometer making certain it does not touch the bottom of the pan. Bring mixture to a boil. Heat to 300 degrees F. Remove from heat. After boiling action has ceased, add several drops of food color (if desired) and flavor. Stir to combine. Pour syrup onto lightly greased cookie sheet or onto a heat resistant surface covered with a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil.

Edited to add: After it cools, break into pieces, or while still hot you can pour into candy molds instead of onto cookie sheet.

If its for a cake I would just marble some fondant together.

If its really for candy I would cheat and hit the nearest bulk candy store and buy some. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for that recipe, Melvira! Just got some candy flavorings, cinnamon and butterscotch, and this would be great for Christmas.

wao102375, I'm sorry... I think that is NOT the type of recipe you were looking for! It's not the crystalized kind, but it is 'sucker' candy. I think you were looking for something to use that would actually LOOK like rocks, is that correct? They do have candy at a local store that looks like that, so I would definitely be willing to 'cheat' and just buy it, you'd save yourself a ton of work. Barring that, Kitagirl is right on with her idea about fondant.

Zmama, I believe that recipe is the same as the one on the Lorann package, and it is FANTASTIC!! It makes great candy! Enjoy!! (My favorite is the Anise flavor... my whole family fights over it!) icon_wink.gif

Your family can HAVE anise flavoring - it's the one we won't use!

OMG!!! You crack open a bowl of that around my house and it's like WWF night!! We're body slamming each other and sneaking up behind each other with folding chairs! When I make home made anise candy the whole family goes beserk... I mean grandparents, cousins, siblings, parents, EVERYONE!! It's funny! And I make the best anise candy on earth!! (Well, ok, in my opinion it's better than any other I have had! haha!) Mostly because I make it so strong and that's how we like it. icon_wink.gif

That's the black licorice flavoring, right?

Come Easter, I'll have a truckload of the black jelly beans for ya!
