Decorating By cookieswithdots Updated 31 Jul 2007 , 7:39pm by cookieswithdots
I'll be working on my bow this weekend and wanted to know appprox. how many loops I should make to go on top of a 6" cake.
I'll make extras just in case for goofs!
Thanks!
Melissa
I usually need around 14 for a 6" cake, but make extras just in case. Here's my tutorial, hope it helps!

Thank you so much! You are awesome. That is what I need for a guide. I've never done a bow- but I think I can handle it. The cake is not due until next weekend so I have some time to practice.
Thanks again!

Thank you for posting that tutorial. I am going to be making a 9x9, 8x8 tiered cake for my soon to be sister in law's wedding shower. What size bow and how many loops will I need ??
Thank you for your help
I decided to make a 3 tier using 10/8/6 pans w/bow. I will have to post a photo of it next week. Your tutorial seems easy. I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Nikki
I forgot to ask...how much fondant will I need to make the bow ? I also plan on making polka dots as well.
Thanks again,
Nikki
batch of mmf ought to be more than enough....my problem was getting the fondant thin enough but not to thin that it would tear.

I like to make at LEAST 30 loops of various sizes for a 6-inch cake. I'll use anywhere from 18 to 25 of them. It depends on how wide your ribbon will be. I prefer a thinner ribbon, so I use more loops. Please don't make your loops from straight fondant or you'll be in for a big disappointment. You must mix your fondant with gumpaste or add some tylose or gumtex to your fondant. Here are a few bows I've made for 6-inch cakes:
Diane your bows and cakes are soooooo pretty and perfect!!! I also should add you are soo right when you say not to do them out of straight fondant. I must say I tried to do them in fondant twice and got so tired of it I was going to give up. Then some great friends gave me some great tips. I did mine out of GP and didn't dry them hanging on anything...I just cut the strips (pearl dusted) and put them together, then layed them on their sides....they were dry in no time!! I was amazed.
Christi, my method kind of meets your method halfway. I do form my loops over a dowel (different sized dowels for different effects), but only leave them on for about an hour. Then, I slide them off. lay them on their sides, and let them finish drying on a baking sheet.
Not sure if this was already mentioned, but if you want to add luster dust, dust the sheet of fondant+gumpaste before cutting out the strips. Then you can touch up if necessary. Much easier than trying to dust individual loops!
Yes..I agree. Fondant alone for a bow is gonna be a mess. I love working with gumpaste! Its the best.
Thank you everyone for your help with my bow. I added a picture of it in my photos. I used Satin Ice Chocolate Fondant and loved it.
Thanks!
Melissa
