A friend wants a 3 tier square wedding cake to feed 150. I was thinking 8" 10" 12" would feed 154, but is 8" too big to be the top tier? Would that look weird?

lots of people make 8,10.12 inch square and round tiers..

12" 10" 8" all by itself is only 126 1"x2" servings, basically 25 short. Even with a top 6" (+10 servings) you'd still be short by approx 15 servings.

Sooo... you could add on the 6" round top tier to solve your proportion worries, and supplement with a 6" square kitchen cake (serves 1 to bring total servings up to the desired 150.

Actual serving count of 12" 10" 8" 6" Round wedding cake + 6" Square kitchen cake=154 servings, 4 in excess of the desired 150.

Cupcakeco--- thanks for the response. I might be losing my mind, but I'm going by Wilton: 8"= 32 serv, 10"=50 serv, 12"=72 for a total of 154?!?! The bride doesn't want to save the top tier and really wants 3 tiers, not 4. My concern is that it might look weird for 8" to be the smallest tier. Other sizes I've cosidered is 7" 10" 13" for 158 and 6" 10" 14" for 166, but I don't really want to buy the 7" and 13" pans and the other is a little too big.

Ok, so where it says "1 " in my previous post it's supposed to say 18. A 6" square serves 18 in 1"x2" pieces.

The 8" 10" 12" square will feed 154. I think maybe on the 126 Cupcakeco meant round cakes

If you did 6" 10" 14" the bride could keep the top tier for the anniversary.

Hmmmm....I'm going by the charts I posted links to. I wonder what's different? In any instance, an 8" won't be too big, as long as the topper or flower topper is in proportion. As long as the top tier and topper are in proportion... I'm sure that it will look fine.

Turning over your pans and stacking them gives a pretty good visual as to what the finished product will look like, size-wise roughly. This might help you to envision the size of the finished top tier.

Ahhh! I completely missed the part about SQUARE... DUH!! No wonder I was confused. Sorry, folks!! Slinking away now!!

With the right topper, an 8" will look fine. To tell ya the truth, when I first started making cakes, an 8" cake as the top tier was the norm. I've only started making 6" cakes as the top tier in the last handful of years.

I just did a 8,10,12 and 16 a few weekends ago.It is in my photos.It was my first big cake and the first time I ever attempted swirls so it's not as good as a lot of peoples on here,or as good as I hope to someday be, but you can get a feel for the size.
