I know a lot of you probably use bubble tea straws for support in your cakes as opposed to skewers or dowels. I don't know why I still use them but I'd like to switch to the straws! Where do you order them from for cheap? I looked around online yesterday some finding the straws for 2-3$ for 50ct but then 5-7$ in shipping! I couldn't believe it.
Thanks,
Dia
I never heard of these things ...LOL
I googled bubble tea straws and found a site called BOBA tea direct....
what the heck is a BOBA? ..pearls? tapioca in tea? please give me a clue...thanks!
how sturdy would you rate these straws?
You can also pick them up from your local Asian grocery store if you have one.
This is how I got mine and I only paid .60 for a package of 50, so it's definitely worth calling around.
adven68, I used them to support a topsy turvey cake, 3 tiers, 3 layers each (12, 9, 6). The darned cake weighed no less than 35 pounds! Anyway, I drove that sucker, fully assembled in the front seat of my little sportscar, 30 miles to the event. Held together like a champ!
Shew!!
Until a week or so ago, I didn't think to go to the Asian markets to get them and I ordered from ebay. My next time will be locally.
They're good support, very thick and sturdy and eay to cut.
You know, something about the thought of drinking tapioca balls mixed in my drink just doesn't do it for me!
I too bought mine off ebay. Our one asian store I went to didn't have any. Should have tried more calls, just kinda creature of habit about using same routes.
When I lived in Washington State, we had a couple Philipino (sp) girls who would bring me one of these Asian Drinks they had tapico in the bottom. Most of them were really good, esp fruit flavors. Can't knock it till you try it. Now I always passed on the "soup" she brought. Smelled awful and was afraid to ask who and what part of the body that meat came from. Loved her anyway.
I've been seeing posts about these straws. Do you use them like you would dowels? Do you have to put a skewer or something in them?

If i sucked a ball through a straw, it would go straight down m windpipe and I would choke...I'm sure of it. I will try them with a spoon! LOL
I have to check these out....as a matter of fact, I saw Geoff on Ace of Cakes last week, cut one of his dowels with a scissor. I was going to pm Mary Alice to ask....maybe this is what he used?
thanks for the feedback!
Mary Alice is on CC?
She and Geoff are my favs!
mine, too. She has posted on here several times...can't think of her screenname at the moment...I'll have to go to one of the older "Duff" threads to find it.
